Marking 50 years since ‘76 student protests, Read Alex hosts public speaking
competition for youth in Alexandra In June 1976, students in Alexandra joined their peers in Soweto and across the country in rising up against the apartheid education system. That month, 34 gave their lives to this youth-led revolution, which marked the beginning of apartheid’s final demise.
50 years later, on Saturday, 6 June 2026, young people in Alexandra will gather at the inaugural Read Alex Public Speaking Competition to reflect on the courage of these brave young activists
and share with the world what it is like to be a young person in Alex today.
The setting is a fitting one. The Alexandra Museum features an exhibition commemorating the
‘76 student uprising and sits across the road from the yard where a young Nelson Mandela once
rented a room. In this hall, grade 8, 9, and 10 learners from high schools across the township will deliver short speeches on topics related to youth empowerment.
The top speaker in each grade will receive a six-month public speaking course with the noted
communications coaching company Unforgettable Speakers. The company’s founder, Palesa Dibakwane Dooms, will judge the competition alongside health activist and Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans Awardee Candice Sehoma Gcaba, and Dr. Busisani Sibiya, a longtime
education advocate and UJ senior lecturer in accounting.
“Read Alex is thrilled to give this platform to young people in Alex,” says Ryan Brown, Head of Read Alex. “We are honoured by the opportunity to see South Africa through their eyes.”
Event Details:
Date: 06 June 2026
Time: 08H00
Venue: Alexandra Museum, 4694 Hofmeyr St, Alexandra
