When I heard about Senator Grahamโs death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.
A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: โIf you canโt admire Joe Biden as a person, youโve got a problem. Heโs the nicest person Iโve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.โ
That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.
I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.
Summer 2015. Several lifetimes ago. A different America.
Lindsey Graham, running for president, says this about Joe Biden. The same summer he said Trump would โkillโ the GOP with his hateful comments.
Several lifetimes ago. A different America.
103-year-old World War II veteran Cpl. Wilbur J. โJackโ Myers, a Williamsport native, sings the national anthem at Camden Yards as part of the Oriolesโ America 250 celebration on Saturday.
Myers served as a corporal gunner in the U.S. Armyโs 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.
He flawlessly delivered โThe Star-Spangled Bannerโ and celebrated after by dancing with his family while Orioles fans gave him a standing ovation.
