Talent makes a runner fast.
Clarity makes a team fast.
Every time I see a “talented but inconsistent” kid, I ask one question:
“Do they know exactly what today’s workout is supposed to teach?”
Because confusion kills consistency faster than laziness ever could.
Most athletes don’t need more motivation — they need to understand the plan.
When they know why they’re doing it, they show up differently.
Clarity isn’t soft.
It’s structure.
And structure is what keeps the wheels from flying off in October.
BREAKING: This week's "expanded" @CIFSS XC Rankings (13 deep per division) are up. Any team that does not advance into postseason from its final league standings but is ranked in 2 of the last 4 rankings is invited to postseason as an at-large qualifier. https://t.co/bzG9l34mWH
The final week of the season isn’t a test of fitness.
It’s a test of alignment.
Can their body, mind, and confidence all show up on the same day?
That’s the real art of coaching.
I’ve seen teams peak in workouts and fade in races.
I’ve also seen average workouts turn into jaw-dropping performances.
The difference wasn’t fitness —
it was focus and belief finally syncing up with fitness.
👉 Takeaway:
When fitness, focus, and faith point the same direction—
you don’t need luck.
You just need a start line.
This Saturday the Eagles toe the line at the Central Park Invite at Central Park, HB. Fresh off her SOP, transfer Carol Dye will don the Eagles uniform for the first time!!!

Distance races aren’t time trials.
If they were, we’d all just mail in our GPS files and call it a day.
What wins races is the ability to handle chaos:
The mid-race move, the gear shift, the surge.
Acceleration is a skill.
So is sliding back into pace afterward.
If athletes never train it, they get exposed the first time someone punches the gas.
Teach it in practice:
– Sprinkle 100–200m surges into a tempo.
– Add the last 200m of a rep faster than the rest.
– Practice settling back into race pace instead of collapsing.
Because the watch measures pace.
But the race rewards rhythm.
Quinn took fifth place in the varsity championship race at the Laguna Hills Cross Country invite on Saturday. Once again, she was the fastest freshman at the meet. @MileSplitWest@milesplit@DyeStat@PrepCalTrack
The new @CIFSS rankings have dropped! Eighty-eight of the 100 teams ranked before Woodbridge week remain ranked after Woodbridge. Seven schools in the Division I Top 10 are ranked in both genders!

A 16-year-old Sophomore in HS just ran 1:42.27 for 800m. The 18th fastest time in history.
Cooper Lutkenhaus beat two world champs and finished a tenth behind another.
Read that again. It’s mind-blowing.
As a former phenom who didn’t live up to the early hype, I keep getting the same question: how do you handle this moment?
Here’s the guidance I’ve shared with a dozen phenoms over the years:
