Law firm leaders are taking notice:

“The younger generation of lawyers is less interested in becoming the older generation of lawyers,” said Daniel Farris, partner-in-charge of the Chicago office of Norton Rose Fulbright.

Why? Traditional firm incentives are eroding as millennial and Gen Z lawyers place increasing emphasis on mental health and work-life balance, and less emphasis on “the pie-eating contest where the reward is more pie.” "They say, ‘No, I don’t want to do that."

Let me tell you from first hand experience--this is a very real phenomenon. And one law firm leaders should get their arms around sooner than later. Adapt or die, so to speak. To be sure, many firms--big and small--are ahead of the curve on this.

Firms that find genuine ways to acknowledge and accommodate work-life integration, mental wellbeing, and their lawyers' whole selves will survive and thrive. The current crop of young lawyers isn't willing to grind away their 20s and 30s. More power to them.

To be clear, there's plenty of room for hard work in this emerging paradigm. Or at least there should be. Great work and client service aren't all-or-nothing propositions. You can be a present parent, great husband, and responsive professional all at the same time.

But our profession needs to find real ways to help young lawyers achieve that balance. Some answers are easy. Allow time for family and friends. Don't denigrate associates. Etc. But some of the answers are harder. Yet they're worth finding.

The good news--there are plenty of places where this is possible in 2024. Big firms, small firms, companies of all sizes, and alternative legal service providers like Latitude.
