@PippaP22@Nickjames40Nick As you suggest, such people would never cheer Rome or Rio being diversified out of existence, and they invariably celebrate diversity while having a dig at Reform etc. Their beliefs and identities seem to be defined by the people they oppose, rather than any coherent philosophy.
@GlenSmith174927@afneil Bizarre how some people don't recognise that 'free' or 'cheap' things provided by the state are actually paid for via hefty taxes and eye-watering levels of debt, which ultimately tank the economy. But hey, free stuff is great, right?
@EternalEnglish Labour have conned kids into getting pointless degrees, made them too expensive to employ, suffocated employers in red tape, rewarded indolence and taxed the economy into oblivion, and fret about unemployment among the young like it's the fault of AI, Putin or whatever.
@patrickxwest I have a copy of Conspicuous Compassion knocking about. What's that, twenty years old? A better expression, I think, than 'virtue signalling', which was coined a decade or so later.
@TheStingisBack Paul Robeson, Woody Strode, Richard Roundtree, Eddie Murphy, Pam Greer, Harry Belafonte, Hattie McDaniel, Yaphet Kotto, Billy Dee Williams, James Earl Jones, Louis Gossett Jr, Danny Glover, Carl Weathers, Whoopi Goldberg, and yes, Sidney fucking Poitier.
If civil service jobs were reserved for working class people who hadn't been to university, middle-class support for the big state would dry up overnight.
@FUDdaily Rejoining would empower the kind of obnoxious technocrats Remainers identify with, at the expense of those they see as their social inferiors, while giving them a pseudo-national identity distinct from the one claimed by the people they despise.
@SimonHarrisMBD I love this kind of thing: midwitted 'am I not clever' deconstruction of obvious truths to own the gammons and signpost your cosmopolitan sympathies. Obviously you'd never do the same to pasta, croissants or samosas, which makes it all the more transparent and amusing.
@Nina_Power_ I know plenty of London-dwellers (as opposed to Londoners) and most of them consider undiverse, clean and orderly places to be hives of bigotry, exclusion and tedium. So being good, vibrant, edgy people, they pretend to be fine with the shit hole London has become.
@FUDdaily The lanyard class wants a population of dependants, grateful for their wisdom and munificence, who live through the aegis of a state that they run. The military represents a different, older form of allegiance, and they despise it.
@GordonDimmack The idea of people from London and Birmingham reaching other parts of the country more quickly and easily is chilling. I mean, have you seen them? Perhaps 2039 is too soon.
@ColinBrazierTV A lot of Remainers see the EU as governance by people like them - an entitled, self-styled managerial elite of lanyard-wearing midwits. Brexit was a rebuke of their right to rule, and they've never forgiven the proles for it.
@DanielJHannan Economic reality is so obvious (and inconvenient) that lefties treat it as a layman's myth, believed by the thick and the selfish. Meanwhile, they act like their hilarious denialist theories are some kind of rare and insightful wisdom. Pathetic.
Since Thatcher, PMs have been left-wing nutters who support the policies that have wrecked the nation, or Tory bottle jobs too haunted by the 'nasty' label to do anything about it. And none of them look beyond the next news cycle.

@_The_Prophet__ I suspect a key factor is that, over the last three decades, younger generations have been taught that their fundamental state is one of fragility, that this is a positive antidote to the macho attitudes of old, and that the greatest threat to their wellbeing is other people.
@philmcraig@OldRoberts953 It's funny - I don't remember the modern, entitled expert class existing pre-Blair. It's as if the push to get half the population into university made having degree like being a member of the landed gentry a hundred years ago.
Spare us the predictable "we need to reflect and listen" bollocks, Labour. Working people don't want your 'help' given that it comes out of their own pockets. They want you to get the fuck out of their way.
