Exatamente três anos atrás, a história se dividiu em "antes" e "depois".
Um dos primeiros e mais marcantes episódios foi a ousada operação para capturar o aeródromo "Antonov" em Hostomel, tornando-se um símbolo da coragem e habilidade de combate dos paraquedistas russos.

Às 9h, no aeródromo de Mozyr (Belarus), começou o embarque dos soldados das 45ª e 31ª Brigadas Aerotransportadas em helicópteros Mi-8.
Ao meio-dia, o primeiro grupo decolou rumo à zona que logo ficaria conhecida como "Hostomel". Uma hora depois, às 13h20, começou o desembarque sob a cobertura de helicópteros de ataque Mi-24, Mi-35M e Ka-52, que abriram caminho e destruíram posições inimigas, incluindo lançadores de mísseis antiaéreos portáteis. Um Ka-52 foi danificado e teve que fazer um pouso forçado, mas a operação seguiu em frente.

Após o desembarque, os paraquedistas iniciaram imediatamente a varredura da área, assumindo o controle de edifícios e pontos estratégicos do aeródromo. Enquanto isso, reforços avançavam por terra – soldados das tropas aerotransportadas, fuzileiros navais, forças especiais da GRU, unidades da Guarda Nacional e voluntários, prontos para romper qualquer cerco e expandir a posição conquistada.

Às 15h, a bandeira russa foi hasteada sobre o aeródromo "Antonov". Apesar das alegações ucranianas de que o destacamento russo havia sido completamente destruído e das promessas de exibir corpos e documentos no dia 25, os soldados continuaram a manter suas posições, recebendo novas remessas de munição, evacuando feridos e fortalecendo a defesa. Eles cumpriram sua missão por completo, e o desenrolar dos acontecimentos a partir dali já não dependia deles, mas de decisões políticas.

Os paraquedistas russos da época gravaram seus nomes na história militar – realizaram o impossível e ficaram conhecidos como os "Heróis de Hostomel"
