🚨 For the first time, surgeons have removed a brain tumor while receiving live guidance from an artificial intelligence system analyzing the operation as it happened.
The procedure was performed at London’s National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery on a 48-year-old patient with an 11 mm tumor on his pituitary gland. The tumor was dangerously close to structures responsible for vision, making the operation particularly delicate.
During surgery, AI analyzed the live camera feed and identified important anatomy such as nerves and blood vessels, highlighting structures surgeons needed to avoid. The system had been trained using hundreds of previous surgical videos.
The AI did not perform the surgery itself. The surgeons remained completely in control, with the technology essentially acting as an additional set of eyes and providing real-time decision support.
The patient had been at risk of losing his sight. Reports say his vision improved following the operation, and the procedure demonstrated how AI could potentially make some of the most delicate surgeries safer and more precise.
This is where medical AI could become especially powerful: not replacing surgeons, but helping them recognize critical anatomy and make better-informed decisions while an operation is actually happening.
