Hey @OldManWinter14 - I'm a journalism/communication student at UW-Madison who'd like to follow a career path like yours. What do you wish you'd known as a college student? #j202

@ianpatt16141578 In my opinion, it is close to 100%. Everything we see on the internet is posted for a reason, whether it is for an agenda, a person's own gain (followers, likes, etc.), or for profit. Everything online is designed to get clicks, meaning to some extent, it's meant to persuade
@zachschu1 I agree with you, @ZiebellTaylor. Celebrity cameos often raise my brand recognition as it puts a well known face on a product. However, I am much more persuaded to buy something if it is suggested/well-reviewed by "regular" people, especially a large group of 50.

With ads becoming more personalized as platforms use our data and track our interactions on social media, do you find yourself appreciating this/finding it useful, or do you find it is an overstep of boundaries? Does it worry you?
@hailey_dumont #UWJ201 #308
I have a hard time trusting social media. Anything I see/hear through social media I am usually immediately skeptical of until I research it further. While info does spread very fast on social media, it is also true that misinformation can spread just as fast too

I definitely think that for our entire childhood we usually believe the same things as our parents, but as we get older, experience more diversity, and move away from parents, it is much more likely that our beliefs may change, even if it is just a little.

As we are learning about fake news/misinformation, I am curious to know if any of you have been fooled by a story that wasn't real and/or shared it around thinking it was real. What was your reaction when you realized it was fake? Has it affected how you trust news?
@ally_wang4 #UWJ201 #308
I would say that yes, it does. However, I do believe that Trump was a special case when it comes to false claims. But it goes to show that social media gives a lot of power to prominent figures in our society, even if the claims they make are false.

I don't believe a company as large and powrful as Disney will die out. However, I think it is likely that Disney may try more experimental media or introduce more of their own new media in the future, as they already own so much of the current/popular media ecology

In the study from Shannon C. McGregor we learned how journalists are starting to use social media to report on public opinion. Do you think social media is an appropriate way to gauge public opinion? Are there limitations to using social media over polls?
@ishaan_chadha @davalos#UWJ201 #308
Differentiation between opinion pieces and reporting the actual facts needs to be made more apparent. Often times they seem to mix together and skew the reality of a story. They should also cite sources clearly and encourage their audience to do their own research
@LucySpeers5 #201 #308
I believe the media directed too much attention to Trump'a false claims of victory and his claims that our electoral system was flawed. Such accusations from the president himself are detrimental to the public's trust in our democracy, which may become apparent later
#UWJ201 #308 In my discussion section we discussed how having a set of laws in place that apply to all social media platforms may prevent radical speech and false claims. Do you think this is fair? Do you think this would take away the uniqueness of each social media platform?
@CaseyAugust2#UWJ201 #308
I think it can be argued both ways, but I believe that it is Madison's historical left leaning that actually attracts the diversity of its student population. As a result, the city continues to lean left with a more diverse, younger, and educated population

For Democrats in Madison, anti-elite attitudes stem mostly from party ideology. Rural republicans hold a "rural consciousness" - the belief that they are misrepresented and there is little concern for their well being in politics (Cramer 2016)
