They will not remember me, or my brothers.

To most people, this is just a tent. To those who served, it's a lifetime of memories.

This photo is me, around 20 years old, staring into space in Afghanistan.

Iraq was already behind me. Afghanistan was now in front of me.

At that age, most people are worrying about nights out, car insurance, or what they’re doing with their life.

Thousands of young servicemen and women were doing that between operational tours, living out of tents, off wagon, sleeping on camp beds if lucky, drinking warm water, eating ration packs, and wishing we had a pillow.

We laughed. We moaned. We took the mick. We got on with the job.

But photos like this do make you stop and think.

Behind every uniform was a young person missing home, family, birthdays, normal life, and probably a decent shower.

Iraq and Afghanistan shaped a generation of veterans in ways most people will never fully understand.

So when you see veterans today, don’t just picture medals, parades and old war stories.

Remember the young lads and lasses who gave up parts of their youth in places most people will only ever read about.

And sometimes, the best support starts with something simple:

“How are you doing, mate?”

One conversation can mean more than you know. 🇬🇧
