🚨A friend of mine brought something to my attention about some internet privacy bills that are being reviewed in the Ohio senate. One is a Google backed bill, that has BROAD sweeping privacy concerns, is an exact replica of a bill passed in CA, and doesn't do much to protect kids - thats SB 175. There's another bill, that was brought FIRST and is supported by everyone who isn't big tech - that bill actually respects privacy and protects kids.
Googles bill is sweeping - gathering data about parents AND kids down to the BROWSER and OS you are using, but also allows any developer to opt out and allows kids to self report their age, whereas the other bill - SB 167 - is tailored specifically to the app store, and gives users the option to indicate if an account belongs to a minor, and to link that account to a parents account. It's intended for the PARENT to regulate CONDUCT, not CONTENT.
The google bill allows your 13 year old to enter into contracts (not something they can do ANYWHERE ELSE) and covers literally every aspect of the experience - essentially a data mining operation without real protections.
We all value our freedom. But, we also realize the internet is a wild place and kids are getting their hands on stuff. Tell your senators to support SB 167 and actually keep privacy at the forefront while allowing parents to control what their kids actually see on their phones - not the Google backed bill that strips that from them while allowing loopholes for developers to "opt out." I am glad I got this before it moved forward. Pay attention!
