The Arctic blasts won't stop -- we'll be exhausted by Groundhog Day
Arctic Blast 1.0 this weekend + winter storm --> 2 more loads of dry Canadian Arctic air dumping into 🇺🇸 and the third could be record cold for Southeast into early February. Temp anomaly Days 6-12 (ECMWF)
Here’s the latest thinking for #DFW:
Northern & northwestern counties should see freezing rain with a faster changeover to sleet/snow Saturday.
Areas along I20, including Dallas and Fort Worth could see more freezing rain before a changeover.
Southern counties will be at a greater risk for higher ice accumulations.
Please plan ahead. Power outages will be possible along with dangerous travel.

This footage from inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa might be the most jaw-dropping video ever captured of a hurricane’s eye, showcasing the infamous “stadium effect."
🧵 125 years ago tonight, a Category 4 Hurricane changed the course of U.S. History. It was just after sunset on September 8th, 1900, when this grisly storm reduced an island city of gold to a landscape of blood-chilling rubble.
This is the story of the Galveston Hurricane.
A Category 3 Major Hurricane, a Tropical Storm, and a tsunami are all ongoing near Hawaii at the same time.
Safe to say this is an INSANE concentration of natural phenomenon in a single region.
These life changing, cutting edge institutions have saved lives. Forecasting advances and lead time warnings would not be where they are today without them. This is a big step backwards.
This is deeply troubling. NWS forecasters don't just come in and put a forecast together. They make processes for all forecasters so much better. I encourage you to read @mammatusman last forecast discussion he wrote to see how deep this cut really is. This is just one example:

BIRDS 🕊️ in the eye of Milton. Those blue signatures represent spikey/jagged/irregular shapes not representative of rain. Likely the birds that have been pulled into the eye, where they can’t fly out due to powerful inward winds. (Imagine being caught in a whirlpool.)@MyRadarWX
Bumpy ride into Hurricane #Milton on @NOAA WP-3D Orion #NOAA43 "Miss Piggy" to collect data to help improve the forecast and support hurricane research.

Since 1979, only two Atlantic #hurricanes have had lower pressures in October than Milton's current pressure of 911 hPa: Mitch (1998, 905 hPa) and Wilma (2005, 882 hPa).
@JamesMillspaug7@zoom_earth This shouldn't be a surprise. Tropical systems can form, intensify, and make landfall anywhere on the Gulf of Mexico and southern to middle Atlantic coasts. History will tell you that the Atlantic basin hurricane usually peaks in late summer and early fall.
NEW: I was able to get some great ground video in Chimney Rock, NC this afternoon — a gorgeous mountain tourist town near Lake Lure that was all but washed away by Hurricane #Helene
This will be a sad thread for everyone who loves WNC
