These are the messages that keep landing in my inbox. Ordinary Ukrainians write to me about relatives caught in the machinery of state coercion, all of it wrapped in lofty slogans about patriotic duty to Mother Ukraine and accompanied by the ritual cries of “We stand with Ukraine” from our Western “friends.”

These people are desperate. They do not know whom to appeal to. They do not know what to do.

The Ukrainian state is not merely deaf and mute to their pain. It seems to mock it.

And every time I read another one of these messages, then open social media and see yet another Western “Slava Ukraini” enthusiast—someone who discovered Ukraine sometime in 2022, slapped a flag on his avatar, and never looked much further—I feel a surge of rage.

Because they do not read these messages.
They do not see the real Ukrainians behind the slogans. And they have no idea what these avatars, hashtags, and righteous declarations help sanctify.

It is a form of modern servitude carried out in the name of militarized nationalism: a system that devours its own people, strips them of agency over their own lives and bodies, and compels them to kill and to die against their will.

If you really stand with Ukraine, you must Stand Against Forced Mobilization in Ukraine.
