Everest, Ego, and Experience
A conversation between two friends planning to climb Mount Everest.

Raj:
Bhai, I have been thinking:
With Google Maps, satellite weather updates, blogs, and videos
Do we really need Sherpas now?
They charge a fee, and we could save a lot if we just go by ourselves.

Arjun:
You want to climb Everest without Sherpas! just to save money?

Raj:
Not just money. I mean, look at what we have -
GPS, oxygen tanks, radios, trackers, emergency beacons, real-time weather alerts.
We can do this. Why pay someone to “guide” us when the mountain is mapped?

Arjun:
Maps tell you where the mountain is.
Sherpas tell you what the mountain is doing today.And it will impact your feelings and mood.

Raj:
Come on, man. Are they really that necessary in this day and age?

Arjun:
Raj, when your body is freezing, oxygen is dropping, and your head feels like it’s about to explode -
Will Google tell you whether your fingers are frostbitten or just cold?

Raj:
Fair point. But still , isn’t it more heroic and exciting to do it all by yourself?
We’re smart, educated. We can figure things out.

Arjun:
Ha! It’s not heroism if you don’t make it back alive.
And by the way even the best climbers take Sherpas.
👉Not because they’re weak,but because they’re wise.

Historically, climbers who took the support of Sherpas have had far higher success rates and significantly lower death rates. Most successful Everest summits, including the first by Hillary and Tenzing, were possible only because of Sherpa support.
Attempts without them are very rare, extremely risky, and often end in failure or tragedy.

Raj:
But what exactly do they do that I can’t?

Arjun:
They have lived their lives on that mountain.
They can feel when the snow beneath your boots is too soft.
They can sense a storm building, before the forecast even sees it.
They know the difference between exhaustion and early signs of altitude sickness-
👉 because they’ve seen it a hundred times, with hundreds of climbers like us.

Raj:
Okay, but isn’t that what training is for?

Arjun:
Training prepares your muscles. Sherpas prepare your mind.
And when you are on that ledge, hanging by a rope, and panic kicks in-
it’s not training that saves you.
It’s experience.
It’s that Sherpa pulling you up.

Raj:
I never thought of it that way.

Arjun:
Think of it like this, you are not paying them to carry your bags.
You are investing in increased certainty, in survival, in the one thing that matters most
👉making it back alive.
You are not paying for a Sherpa.
👉You are paying for a second chance if things go wrong.

Raj:
Damn. That’s powerful.

Arjun:
So finally! are we taking Sherpas?

Raj:
Yes obviously
we are taking Sherpas. 🙏

The Truth:

They are your support when you break down.
Just like in life, or in investing -
Data, tools, and apps help.
But it’s the experienced guide who helps you finish the journey, not just start it.

And every journey only matters -
if it ends well.🙏

@BarbequeNation worst ever experience today in last so many years. Food was not upto the mark and the service standard was very poor. 1/10. Maybe because of Diwali, they were ill staffed. Should have closed bookings.
