Congratulations to living legend Mario Sanna and all of the outstanding faculty at Gruppo Otologico in Piacenza, Italy on organizing the First International Congress on Head and Neck Paraganglioma. What a wonderful meeting! Thank you, Prof Sanna & Gruppo Otologico!
Here is an example of an intra-operative evoked auditory brainstem response (eABR) obtained during recent ABI placement... notice the first wave identified is wave III, because the ABI bypasses the cochlea and cochlear nerve (see diagram). #houseinstitute#NF2
At @NASBS this year the Kawase approach was much discussed. It was “originally” described by Dr. Kawase in 1985. But was it really “original”? Take a look at this video from 1966 from the House Ear Institute and judge for yourself!

Neurosurgery lost a brilliant and quiet giant. His surgeries were breathtaking with their elegance and precision. I was lucky to spend time with him in clinic where his diagnostic genius was always on display. https://t.co/iH893KTqT9
@BernardBendokMD Thank you for posting this. Prof. Ciric epitomized a certain kind of wise, elegant & dignified gentleman surgeon who sadly no longer seem to walk hospital halls. He was generous to med students (such as I), residents and colleagues. He will be missed!
The House Institute Foundation held its first NF2 Symposium - an educational event for patients and their families, friends, and caregivers. Have you checked out the recording on our YouTube Channel yet? https://t.co/emFs5CZQAA
The facial nerve origin at the brainstem is closer in proximity to the lower cranial nerves than to the origin of CNVIII. I prefer to expose the facial nerve with a supra-condylar approach in order to get this view. #hemifacialspasm#microvasculardecompression#neurosurgery
It was a great honor and pleasure to serve on a panel discussing the surgical management of NF2 related tumors with my friends and colleagues from the USA, UK and France!

We led an international study looking at SRS for facial nerve outcomes, the such largest study in the literature. Surprisingly, we found that labyrinthine segment involvement was not a predictor of poor facial nerve outcomes, but rather the opposite!

The appropriate role for radiosurgery in NF2 is controversial. Our data may provide more support for SRS for meningiomas than for other NF2 associated tumors such as schwannomas. Nevertheless, caution is warranted. #NF2#Neurosurgery#menignioma

Although originally intended for patients with NF2, the ABI may also be the best option for rare cases of hearing loss not amenable to cochlear implantation, such as in this case we reported recently.
