๐ Here's something that surprised us about the research on breast cancer in firefighters: women made up less than 4% of those studied (Cardona et al., 2024).
Exposures that were never recorded can't be studied.
Start your record with the free IPSDI Exposure Tracker app. Adding past exposures is easy, and you can opt in to share your record with the National Firefighter Registry. ๐ below

In public safety data, the hardest gaps to close are the ones nobody knew to record. If you work in the #fireservice, paid or volunteer, take a moment to record your exposures. Future you, and future research, will thank you.

๐ NIOSH Wants Your Feedback!
Weโre helping spread the word about a survey from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
@NIOSH is looking for feedback to better understand the occupational safety and health information needs of workers, employers, and other stakeholders.
Your input can help NIOSH better understand what information and resources are most useful.
We encourage our first responder community to take a few minutes to participate!

This is a great read: "the more we learn, the more we realize just how complex the #firefighter#exposure story really is โ because every fire creates a unique chemical cocktail." Thankful for the researchers doing this work! #OccupationalExposure
๐ฅNEW READ:
Firefighters are exposed to complex mixtures of chemicals on the fireground. But what happens when those chemicals interact inside the body?
Some effects may add up. Others may amplify each other. And in many cases, researchers still donโt have all the answers.
Dr. Crystal Sweeney of the Illinois Fire Service Institute explores the science behind firefighter exposure mixtures and why continued research matters:

Reno is getting hammered this fire season. Last week, 140k acres burned. Today the #HawkFire is already over 2500 acres. It's not even red flag conditions. This is not normal.

The job changes you.
The calls. The losses. The mistakes. The lessons.
You can let those experiences harden you, or you can use them to build perspective, resilience and purpose.
Resilience isn't always bouncing back.
Sometimes it's bouncing forward.

More than 1,300 firefighters answered @FireRescue1 's fifth annual #WhatFirefightersWant survey. This year the subject was #training, and the results say something most of the #fireservice already suspected.
The motivation is there. Nine out of ten respondents earned a certification in the past five years. The system around that drive is where it breaks down โ scheduling, staffing, facilities, and no consistent way to tell whether the drill actually made anyone better.
Every training officer who has stood in front of a budget committee knows how hard it is to fund a feeling. It's much easier to fund a number.

#RFQ: @theIPSDI is seeking qualified vendors to assess the integration of wearable data into the IPSDI Exposure Tracker, to help firefighters build a more complete record of their occupational exposure to carcinogens and hazardous conditions. Scope includes an environmental landscape, technical feasibility, data modeling, and privacy/HIPAA considerations.
Questions due: Aug 14, 2026
Quotations due: Aug 24, 2026
Project target: Sept 1 โ Nov 13, 2026
If youโ have experience with consumer wearables, health-adjacent data pipelines, or public safety/occupational health work, this could be a great fit.
