Cars are a luxury good. They are INCREDIBLY expensive to buy, maintain and repair. They are a financial trap for low income people. Centering our civilization on them dilutes the tax base, destroys and degrades human settlements and immiserates, sickens and kills so many people.
@cosaingalway@CallananDarragh Yes, and this kind of thinking leads to traffic. If you want to avoid traffic, you have to build a transportation SYSTEM with multiple, viable ways to get from point A to B. You also need planning models that enable walking and cycling.
Reimagining our road space to support public transport and active travel will help create a more vibrant and people-friendly city. Let's prioritise the collective over individual comfort.
According to the CSO, only 2,4% of children in Ireland cycle to school. 24% walk, but the majority (55%) get to school by car.
This is a shocking statistic. Our car-centric transport system has taken the freedom away from our children. We are enabling inactivity, not activity.
