We are aware of an abundance of smoke from numerous active wildfires in central and southern Georgia that is being driven toward South Carolina by southwesterly winds. This smoke is affecting our eastern counties, the lowcountry and even Midlands areas.
If you are seeing and/or smelling wildfire smoke, it is most likely from those wildfires in Georgia. To see if there’s a reported or active wildfire in your area, please visit our ‘Active Wildfires’ map at https://t.co/IuW6dVGfpK
Our Spring Fire Officer IV class has made it to the final day where their presentations to a mock county council will be scored by a panel of evaluators. This has been a great class!
Another great @scfirefighters event at the Statehouse, and thank you Rep. McDaniel for making Samuel’s day! He even got a challenge coin from @schousespeaker

I enjoy every Fire Academy Recruit School graduation, but this last one was special for me because two of the graduates wear the same college ring as I do. Congratulations to Wilder Jordan (Tango '12) and Parker Langenberg (Tango '25). Go Dogs!

This never gets old: I hand-sign each 1151 Recruit School certificate. To put that in perspective, the Fire Academy prints over 30,000 certificates a year, and yes, a computer prints my signature for all of them…except these.
Students who complete EVDT after September 1, 2025, will automatically receive a SC Fire Academy certificate. With proper documentation, they can also earn an IFSAC certificate. Learn more:

On Wednesday several of our staff visited the @ALFireCollege. The purpose of our visit was to learn about their system and different program areas. I was impressed with everything that I saw, and I am grateful to Director Matt Russell and his team for the southern hospitality!

Congratulations to the 20 students who completed the Fire Academy's 80-hour Fire Officer III course last week! We're proud to support leaders who are strengthening the fire service across South Carolina.
It is with deep sadness that SCDPS announces the loss of one of our own, Trooper First Class Dennis D. Ricks. TFC Ricks passed away Wednesday night, nearly four days after being hit by a vehicle while performing a traffic stop in Orangeburg County. A graduate of SCHP Class 123 in September 2023, Ricks has proudly served in Troop 7 (Orangeburg, Calhoun) since then.
This is a devastating loss for his family, for those who worked alongside him in Troop Seven and the entire Highway Patrol and DPS family. Our deepest condolences go to his wife and family as they navigate this immense loss.
More information will be provided on social media, our website https://t.co/srr2JlWfBM and through media notices.
