Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit animal advocacy organization dedicated to passing legislation that protects and saves animals.
As chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a rescue dog owner myself, I am appalled by what the @LATimes has uncovered in its investigation into, and exposure of, extensive fraud and suffering in the puppy trade. 🧵

Great news: the OCTO Act (A.B. 3162), has passed the California Senate! If the Governor signs the bill, it will make California the second state to ban cruel octopus farming and the first to ban the sale of farmed octopus. 🐙🥳
Our letter in support of the OCTOPUS Act, which seeks to ban commercial octopus aquaculture, has been published in Science.
"Commercial octopus farming is incapable of meeting welfare requirements, unsustainable, and unnecessary for sustenance."

Thank you to Rep. Courtney Neron for meeting with octopus defender and environmental advocate Lily Niederhofer today.
Lily presented on the topic of stopping octopus farming in support of potential legislation to ban octopus farming in Oregon.🐙
Our OCTO Act is making its way through the Senate. AB 3162 will prohibit the farming of octopuses for human consumption. We aim to protect these sentient, intelligent creatures before efforts are underway to enclose and farm them. #CALeg#octopuses#octopi
Congratulations Lily on your successful fundraiser, and for bringing attention to the rising threat these awe-inspiring creatures face. AB 3162 will preemptively ban the farming of octopi in state waters. Join Lily's efforts in protecting octopi by supporting for AB 3162!🐙
We are so proud of our founder and president, @judiemancuso!
This endorsement is no surprise given Judie's years of advocacy for the environment and, of course, animals 🐯🐱🐶🌳🌎

We are thrilled to see the TREES Act pass the NY legislature! The Act is a sister-bill to our cosponsored California Deforestation-free Procurement Act, which we hope to bring back soon!
@GovKathyHochul, please protect our planet's forests by signing this important bill!
Good News 👏the Tropical Rainforest Economic & Environmental Sustainability Act, AKA TREES Act, just passed in the New York State Senate.
Now it's up to @GovKathyHochul to sign it into law and deliver the climate action she's promised!
We agree @GovKathyHochul!
Great timing—Both chambers of your state's legislature just passed the NY TREES Bill to shift New Yorkers' tax dollars from destroying forests & driving climate change
It'll be waiting on your desk to sign when you get home 😊

I couldn't agree more, @GovKathyHochul. NY can help right now by ending our contribution to the destruction of rainforests in South America and West Africa by enacting the TREES Act that just passed the Legislature today. I urge you to sign the bill - https://t.co/oQOuoa2cjZ
Stand up for animals, people, & the planet — don't let the EATS Act language into the House Farm Bill.

California’s Prop 12 helps our state's consumers ensure their food purchases promote animal welfare, human health, worker safety, and the environment.
Today, @SenAlexPadilla, @SenBooker, @SenMarkey, @SenWarren and I sent a letter to @SecVilsack opposing efforts to dismantle Prop 12, which was approved by 63% of CA voters in 2018 and upheld by SCOTUS.
It's interesting that the pork industry is not about producing food; it is about slaughtering pigs. I wonder how damaging it is to have something called the "National Pork Board" to protect the interests of pig slaughter? Or "the National Cattlemens Beef Association" or the "National Egg Board..." What if we just had boards that were about feeding the world, not promoting a certain method of producing food? Would these corporations be more willing to pivot if their identity wasn't tied to the success of their own production method?
What if the ink pen industry was super tied to making sure people continued to write with pens and didn't use computers? They made sure that government forms were all handwritten, and children were not allowed to write papers on computers unless they got a note from their doctor. The industry made writing on paper seem like this really manly thing, and men tied their masculinity to handwriting and only women and liberals used computers... anyways...
Hallie Jones and Judie Mancuso are the first two candidates to enter the race for two available seats on the Laguna Beach City Council in November. https://t.co/0P5rP008im
