#Statistics: In May 2026, 63 sorties of US military land-based reconnaissance aircraft were spotted over the #SouthChinaSea according to ADS-B data, decreasing compared with the number in the last month. Cases: USN P-8As operated on May. 18 and 26.

In May 2026, a total of 18396 Vietnamese fishing vessels with 271943 tracking points were recorded by the AIS in the whole #SouthChinaSea, increasing compared with 17319 in last month. BTW, many ships did not operate AIS all the time.

Representatives from the Chinese and U.S. militaries held a working group meeting of the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) in Hawaii from May 28 to 29, 2026. Guided by the important consensus on building a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability and on the basis of equality and respect, the two sides had candid and constructive exchanges on the current China-U.S. air and maritime safety and security situation, evaluated the execution of the Rules of Behavior for Safety of Air and Maritime Encounters since the MMCA in 2025, discussed measures to improve China-U.S. military maritime safety and security. Huangyan Dao is an inherent part of China’s territory. Since May, forces of the Chinese PLA STC have enhanced combat readiness patrols in the territorial sea and airspace of Huangyan Dao and its surrounding areas.

Such patrols serve as an effective countermeasure to cope with all sorts of rights-violation and provocative acts. They are meant to resolutely safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and uphold peace and stability in the South China Sea.
