I sat down and actually did the math on what I need in my 401k by 65 to retire at the same standard of living my grandpa had.

He had a pension. Paid-off house. Zero debt at retirement.

For me to match that lifestyle with just a 401k, assuming average market returns,

I need roughly $2.1 million saved by 65.
I have $31,000. I’m 32.

At my current contribution rate I’ll have about $780,000 by then.

Less than half of what I actually need.

He didn’t do anything I’m not doing.

He just retired into a system that was still keeping its promises.
