The M3 between Junctions 2 and 3 typically carries around 135,000 vehicles daily, running beside St Ann’s Lake—part of a Special Protection Area and designated SSSI. Historic runoff from the eastbound carriageway, via 31 outfalls, has contributed to a water quality rating of ‘Poor’ by Defra as recently as 2022.
Earlier this year SDS worked with Environ Civils and Connect Plus Services on behalf of National Highways to deliver a new #surfacewater treatment system. A 500 metre long #drainage channel now treats #runoff from the carriageway using SDS Aqua-Xchange™, which removes toxic metals, hydrocarbons and microplastics before the water can reach the lake.

SDS has installed a smart water storage system at Rheinmetall BAE Systems (RBSL) in #Telford as part of a flood mitigation project led by Shropshire Council. The 10,000-litre tank captures rainwater and uses wireless tech to monitor levels in real-time, releasing water before forecasted rainfall to reduce pressure on the local drainage network. This initiative is part of the River Severn Partnership’s £4 million RSPAWIR programme to improve climate resilience and water management across the region.

Today, @DrNeilSewell Director of New Technology Services at SDS, presented SDS’s pioneering approach to sustainable water management to a panel of judges, as the company bids for its first NCE award.
Over the past 18 months, SDS has developed and deployed two key technologies, Intellistorm® and SYMBiotIC™, which integrate live weather forecastingdata with IoT technology to optimise rainwater collection, reduce potable water consumption, and mitigate flooding risks. These systems have already delivered significant environmental and operational benefits across various sectors, including reducing water usage at Devon & Cornwall Police Headquarters and alleviating pressure on local sewer systems in aLancashire village.
Neil's presentation highlighted the important role SDS plays in shaping the future of water management, demonstrating our commitment to innovation, sustainability and scalable solutions for a water-secure future. We are proud to be part of the #NCEAwards2025.

With the temperature at Kew Gardens reaching 28.0 °C and still climbing, it is now officially the warmest start to May on record for the UK
The previous May 1st record high temperature was 27.4 °C at Lossiemouth in Scotland in 1990

Today, on April 22nd, we join millions around the world in celebrating Earth Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting our planet and its natural resources.
Since its inception in 1970, #EarthDay has grown into a global movement, uniting individuals and communities in the fight against #climatechange, promoting #sustainability and advocating for environmental conservation.
As we reflect on the progress made and the challenges ahead, let us continue to take action, support renewable #energy and strive towards a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.

This #EarthDay, help the environment by flushing only the three Ps: poo, paper, and pee.
Flushing sanitary products, wipes and other items pollutes waterways, harms wildlife and can block drainage systems. 🌎
SDS has been shortlisted for the NCE Awards 2025 in the ‘Impact in Water and Environment – Contractor’ category. This recognition reflects our commitment to innovative, sustainable water management solutions tackling global challenges like water scarcity and flooding.
Over the past 18 months, we have implemented in-house developed technologies such as Intellistorm® and SYMBiotIC™, using Internet-of-Things and live weather forecasting data to optimise rainwater reuse and attenuation. Our partnerships with emergency services providers including regional Police and housebuilders like Barratt Developments have delivered impressive, measurable results, including saving 90,000 litres of potable water in the first few months of operation at Devon & Cornwall Police HQ in Exeter simply by recycling rainwater with which to flush the building’s toilets.
Irrespective of ultimate success in the Awards, SDS remains dedicated to delivering smarter, more sustainable water management solutions for the benefit of the environment and communities.
There’s a small chance of very high warming even with moderate future emissions, reports @newscientist, referring to a new PIK study. It’s the first to make long-term projections over 1,000 years while accounting for established carbon cycle feedbacks.

Major carbon cycle feedbacks like permafrost thaw could amplify warming across this millennium. Even ‘safe’ emission paths may overshoot 2°C. The Paris goal is a physical limit, not a political choice. Today’s actions shape life on Earth for centuries.

We are pleased to announce that Sam Burgess, Water Reuse Manager at SDS, will be speaking at the Society of Public Health Engineers (SoPHE) Technical Conference 2025 on March 27th, a key industry event addressing the critical challenges of water scarcity, climate change and sustainable engineering.
As part of Session 4: Leading the Way – Smart and Sustainable Water Solutions, Sam will join a panel of experts to explore the role of intelligent water management in building climate resilience. With increasing pressure on water resources and the growing impact of extreme weather, innovative, intelligent solutions are essential to safeguarding water security and sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who visited our stand at Futurebuild last week– we truly appreciate your interest and the opportunity to connect.
We would also like to say a big thank you to those who attended Neil Sewell's presentation, "SDS Innovation Talk: Smart Learnings from Leaky Water Butts," and got involved in the interesting Q&A at the end. In this session, Neil discussed the deployment of residential property rainwater interception devices by water companies across the UK to address CSO spills and localised surface water flooding. He shared valuable insights from SDS’s experience with Intellistorm® smart water butt devices and how they compare to traditional leaky systems. The analysis revealed fascinating findings regarding the practical and financial merits of both approaches and provided some thought-provoking considerations about the real value of leaky water butts.
If you weren’t able to visit us or attend the presentation, please feel free to reach out. We’d be happy to provide more information and discuss how our solutions can support your current and future projects.
Only one week to go until Futurebuild 2025!
Join us at ExCeL London from 4th-6th March at stand B60. SDS will be showcasing our advanced water storage, treatment and reuse solutions, designed to tackle water scarcity, flood risk and environmental pollution.
Make sure to catch @DrNeilSewell , SDS Director of New Technology Systems, at the Placemaking Impact Stage on Tuesday, 4th March at 13:55.
