The orthodoxy of the people who still control the Democratic Party is this: you’re not supposed to believe in anything other than your own self-enrichment, status advancement and fealty to the party itself — and those who believe in anything bigger or more idealistic are the problem who need to be eyerolled, disempowered and purged.

Once you understand that this is the orthodoxy at the top of the party & its corporate media machine, literally everything about national Democratic politics and The Discourse makes perfect sense.

Every event, every machination, every political storyline is inevitably twisted into a weapon to advance this larger orthodoxy. It is an iron law of American politics — and has been even amid the disintegration of the society and the immiseration of millions of Americans.

I don’t really know what will change it (though there are glimmers of change in a few electoral contests). But at this point I can’t blame anyone for giving up. This orthodoxy is the defining political vector of our lifetimes. It will be studied by future historians…if there is a future.

@JakeTurx The casualty numbers are extremely underrepresented. They are only counting confirmed and identified bodies. The vast majority of the dead can not be identified and are not counted. Nobody is talking about the missing. Including missing puts it at > 10%

Even if she was charged with a crime, the US embassy is charged with ensuring the safety and humane treatment of all US citizens while they are abroad. They are to ensure all us citizens have legal counsel
