SOF, or Special Operations Forces, are special operations units that fall under the same umbrella, such as CAG, DEVGRU, Special Forces, Rangers, SEALs, MARSOC, PJs, and so on (there are more that fit under the umbrella, but you get the idea).

It is a broad term used to identify special operations.

Special Forces is the specific name of the Green Berets. Their official name is US Army Special Forces. We are the only ones authorized to wear the Special Forces long tab.

If you are talking about American special operations forces and you don’t specify which one, then you use SOF.

If you are talking about Green Berets specifically then you use SF or Special Forces. GB is also fine.
