When floodwaters recede, there is still more to do

In Bhadrak, #Odisha, more than 411,000 people have been affected by riverine flooding and waterlogging following a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. Homes and community infrastructure have been damaged, drinking water sources #contaminated, and access to several villages has been disrupted.

In the aftermath, something as basic as a glass of safe water can become a serious public health concern. Contaminated handpumps and #unsafe water increase the risk of diarrhoeal and vector-borne diseases - making WASH support an essential part of #survival and #recovery.

SEEDS is responding in Bhadrak.
Our teams are working across five flood-affected blocks, combining emergency WASH assistance with mobile outreach to deliver support directly to hard-to-reach communities.

The response includes:
💧 Emergency WASH kits for 1,000 vulnerable households
🚐 Three WASH-on-Wheels teams taking safe-water and public-health messages into affected communities
🫧 Chlorination of 100 contaminated community handpumps
📢 Community demonstrations and mobile awareness on safe water, hygiene and disease prevention

The response prioritises women-headed households, children, pregnant and lactating women, older persons, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

Post-disaster, safe water is not a luxury. It is #protection. As India's flood season continues to unfold, SEEDS remains with communities - not only helping them survive the immediate #humanitarian crisis, but reducing the #health risks that can follow.

On the ground when it matters most

When a #disaster strikes, being on the ground matters. Staying accountable matters even more. The July cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides across Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir left families with damaged homes, disrupted water and sanitation systems, and the loss of essential household assets.

SEEDS responded where the need was greatest in Jammu and Kashmir. Across 19 villages, seven blocks and seven panchayats, we reached 5,293 vulnerable people with emergency WASH and shelter kits.

Preventing outbreak of disease

The aftermath of the 2026 floods will persist across Dhemaji, Sivasagar and Charaideo districts in Assam, and Bhadrak district in Odisha. Communities will have compromised drinking-water sources, sanitation infrastructure and hygiene conditions.

Floodwater contamination of handpumps and other water points, prolonged waterlogging, overcrowding at relief sites and disrupted access to reliable public-health information increase the risk of diarrhoeal disease and other WASH-related public-health concerns.

Along with information dissemination, ensuring adherence to hygiene practices in this critical phase requires practical demonstration, repeated reinforcement, community engagement and context-specific technical assessment.

The Akshvi Community is now live

On #WorldHumanitarianDay, in the presence of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)INDIA member Rita Missal the #AkshviCommunity was launched. Applauding the platform, she emphasised the need to ensure voices, experiences, and evidence that emerge shape practice.

Convened by @SeedsIndia , the Akshvi Community brings together practitioners, communities, government, researchers, donors, business and media to collectively strengthen how we understand and respond to climate-related loss and damage.

At the launch, Steve Glovinsky encouraged community leaders to ask members questions, underscoring the inherent human desire to help each other during humanitarian crises.

SEEDS co-founder @manu_seeds emphasised the importance of knowledge exchange among those working on the front lines of climate-vulnerable areas.

The power of such a collective could change the narratives at the key platforms just as communities and civil society have helped raise the point of loss and damage from an issue experienced on the ground to one discussed at the highest levels of global climate action - including at COP.

This is where Akshvi comes in.
