Today we recognize the incredible Personal Support Workers who care for our loved ones and support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
PSWs are there during some of life’s most difficult moments, bringing compassion, patience, and dignity to those who need it most. Their work is essential — not only to our healthcare system, but to the strength and well-being of our communities and our country.
Thank you to every Personal Support Worker for your care, kindness, and dedication each and every day.
Happy Personal Support Workers Day!
Une économie forte dépend d'un secteur des soins dynamique et des travailleurs acharnés qui le rendent possible.
À chaque préposé aux services de soutien à la personne: merci de prendre soin de nos proches avec dignité et respect.
To every Personal Support Worker: thank you for caring for our loved ones with dignity and respect. You deserve that same security and respect when you retire. Together, we'll build a better health care system, for workers and for patients. #PSWDay
Today, on the National Day of Mourning, we honour the lives of all workers who have been injured or lost their lives on the job.
As healthcare workers, we show up every day with care, compassion, and dedication, often in challenging and unsafe conditions, and every single one of us deserves to go home safe at the end of their shift.
We honour Ashiru Awoyemi, a PSW whose death was preventable, and Nancy Grewal, whose loss exposed serious gaps in home care safety.
We mourn all the healthcare workers we lost who risked their lives keeping our communities safe during the pandemic.
We remember.
And we recommit to fighting for safer workplaces for all.
Last Thursday, the first-ever cohort of our SEIU Healthcare Training Centre’s Internationally Educated Nurses Career Pathway Program graduated.
Over 12 weeks, these nurses showed great determination - balancing long work hours, family responsibilities, and their commitment to building a future in Ontario’s healthcare system.
With more IENs set to join the program soon, the impact is only beginning. Ontario is facing a nursing shortage in the tens of thousands in the coming years, and these nurses will be a vital part of the solution.
This continues our new era of union-led innovation; strengthening healthcare across Canada and building a better future for workers, patients, residents, and families.
Congratulations to these incredible nurses!
This morning, our President Tyler Downey and frontline developmental service workers stood alongside Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, David Piccini, to announce new legislation that would guarantee mandatory WSIB coverage for workers in retirement homes, group homes, and other residential care settings, bringing them in line with hospital and nursing home workers.
This is a major milestone in a fight our union has led for more than a decade. For members affected, access to WSIB means greater economic security and fewer barriers from private insurance. It ensures that when injuries happen, workers can focus on healing, not bills. Today’s announcement brings us closer to making that protection a reality.
We look forward to this historic legislation being introduced in the coming weeks and will continue to advocate for all MPPs to vote in favour to make it the law.
🚨🗳️Dr. Danielle Martin is a family physician and healthcare leader who understands what it takes to strengthen our healthcare system. She worked shoulder to shoulder with SEIU members at Women’s College Hospital, and we know she’ll have our backs in Ottawa. #SEIUvotes
🚨🗳️Doly Begum is a leader who has consistently shown up for our members, advocated for healthcare, and fought for Scarborough. She stood with healthcare workers as an MPP at Queen’s Park, and we know she’ll have our backs in Ottawa. #SEIUvotes
SEIU Healthcare President @downeyty brought our members’ voices to the Home and Community Care Conference this afternoon as part of the “Building the Home Care Workforce Canada Needs: From Pressure to Sustainable Scale” panel.
Alongside leaders from across the sector, he made one thing clear: the people doing this work every day must be at the centre of the solutions.
Real change will take real collaboration. Workers, unions, employers, and government must come together to build a system that is stable, sustainable, and supports the people who keep it running.
When workers have the support they need to stay and grow, the entire home care system is stronger.
@SparkConfer
Home care workers play an important role in supporting people and families across Ontario.
Sitting down yesterday with members of @SEIUHealthCan to hear their stories of determination and resilience was truly inspiring.
I look forward to working together on the sector’s priorities!
Thank you to Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini for joining SEIU Healthcare President Tyler Downey and more than 20 homecare members at our head office this morning.
Minister Piccini heard directly from the frontline; powerful, personal stories that underscored the realities of the job. Members spoke about shift instability, ongoing health and safety risks, low wages, lack of access to WSIB coverage, and the burden of out-of-pocket costs like parking while on shift.
These are not new challenges, but they are urgent ones. Our members made it clear: real change is needed to ensure homecare jobs can become sustainable, long-term careers.
These are the faces of our union.
Women who organize. Women who lead. Women who fight for justice at work and in our communities.
Happy International Women’s Day. 💜
Wishing all who celebrate Ramadan a month filled with peace, renewal, and blessings. 🌙
Ramadan is a time of reflection, prayer, generosity, and community. As many fast from dawn to sunset, small acts of thoughtfulness go a long way — being mindful of fasting, allowing space for prayer and iftar, and leading with kindness, patience, and understanding.
Happy Lunar New Year. May the Year of the Fire Horse bring strength and unity.
Lunar New Year is celebrated in many places across Asia and around the world. Traditions may differ, but the spirit remains the same. Fresh starts, gratitude, and wishes for prosperity and good health.
Say hello to our members at Yee Hong 🧧🏇
