👶 Joseph Kevin Keegan was born in a village outside Doncaster in northern England on 14 February, 1951

⛏️ The son of a Newcastle United supporter and grandson of a heroic coal miner who saved lives in the West Stanley mining disaster, Keegan grew up in East Yorkshire

😞 A prodigious talent as a youngster, Keegan had an unsuccessful trial with Coventry City as a teenager before arranging a try-out for local side Doncaster - but was devastated to learn the trial was earlier in the day

🔍 Keegan balanced amateur football on weekends with his job as an office clerk at an engineering company until he was spotted by Fourth Division side Scunthorpe United

🔩 Throughout his time with Scunthorpe, Keegan also worked at a local steelworks

🔴 In 1971, Keegan's life changed when he joined Liverpool for £33,000, negotiating a £50-per-week pay packet

🏆 Over the next six years, Keegan won three First Division titles, one European Cup, two Charity Shields, an FA Cup and two UEFA Cups, becoming one of English football's most recognisable players

🇩🇪 In 1977, he moved to the Bundesliga to sign for West German heavyweights Hamburger SV where he won back-to-back Ballon d'Or titles in 1978 and 1979

😇 Returning to England in 1980, Keegan averaged over a goal every other game for Southampton

⚫️ Then, in a move which defied logic, the former Ballon d'Or winner joined Second Division side Newcastle in 1982, returning to the club of his late father

🎯 Keegan scored 21 and 27 goals in his two seasons as a Newcastle player before departing St James' Park in a helicopter which landed on the pitch at the end of his testimonial

💼 Returning to Tyneside in 1992, Keegan transformed a beleaguered Newcastle side as the team's manager, winning promotion to the Premier League in his first full season at the helm

🥈 Newcastle finished 3rd, 6th, 2nd and 2nd in the next four seasons with Keegan in charge. The team developed a reputation as 'The Entertainers', twice losing out to Manchester United for the Premier League title

📈 After leaving Newcastle, Keegan took over at Fulham, helping the team finish as Second Division champions in 1999 with 101 points

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Keegan later had an 18-month spell in charge of England before leading Manchester City to the First Division title in 2002, finishing the campaign with 108 goals scored and 99 points

🔙 Years later, 'King Kev' made yet another return to Newcastle, taking the reins following controversial owner Mike Ashley's takeover of the club

💰 This spell was decidedly less successful, ending with Keegan suing the club in a wrongful dismissal case - which he won and was paid £2m in damages

🐕 "I was the mongrel who made it to Crufts, and that was fine by me", Keegan later said of his career

🙏 It was announced earlier this year Keegan had begun treatment after being diagnosed with cancer

❤️ At Newcastle's FA Cup Third Round fixture with Bournemouth last weekend, fan group 'Wor Flags' unveiled a giant surfer with a message that read: "Long Live The Messiah"

🏟️ At Anfield and St James' Park in particular, Keegan's name is revered
