ANNOUNCEMENT:
I'm starting a newsletter where I'll share my favorite new electronic music, along with thoughts about the tunes / scene / industry / etc. It's called @_FirstFloor and the first issue is going out in a few hours. Feel free to subscribe here: https://t.co/BX3ZNGm7l3
For this month’s edition of Second Floor, @ShawnReynaldo explores the long-germinating “new school” of jungle music, which is maybe not all that new, actually.
Pretty sure this is the first time I've ever talked to an artist about the lingering effects of their traumatic brain injury. Kudos to @ayescold for both the honesty and vulnerability she brought to this interview.
Long before "Latin club" became dance music's hottest hype, Colombia's @julianna_808 was turning out dancefloors on multiple continents—and doing it with hard-to-classify, genre-busting sounds.
She applied that same sensibility to her guest recommendation in today's First Floor.
After many years of making top-shelf techno as Shifted, @driftingover adopted a new name (Carrier) and started making some thrillingly unconventional tunes. He honestly sounds better than ever, and today he's contributed a guest recommendation to the latest First Floor mailout.
The upcoming book from @embot is quite unlike most dance music titles, and is primarily set in the Bushwick scene during a time of mass political and social upheaval. She told me about that and more in an interview for @_FirstFloor.
Link in the usual spot.
There's no paywall on the interview for the next 24 hours, so find the link in the usual spot and give it a read.
And if you're somehow not familiar with Tim Reaper already, do yourself a favor and check out his wildly prolific label, Future Retro London. https://t.co/n3BFGu32cr
Tim Reaper has an LP coming out soon on @Hyperdub and has been widely anointed as a leader of "new-school jungle." He didn't ask for that, but he sure does seem determined to bring as many other artists as possible along for the ride.
I interviewed him for @_FirstFloor.
Nobody sounds like Shackleton, which is a big part of why his music is so amazing.
But have you heard all of his collaborative projects during the past decade? Sometimes Shackleton doesn't even sound like Shackleton, so I decided to do a deep dive tracking his sonic evolution.
There's no paywall on this interview for the next 24 hours, so find the link (in the usual place) and give it a read.
Even though we don't talk about Jeff Mills, pop edits or the hardcore continuum, I swear there's a lot of wisdom (his) inside.
I know that @Vinncent isn't the likeliest candidate for a @_FirstFloor interview, but when I wanted to talk about the politicization of cultural discourse and the role of the media (and social media) in that, I figured it made sense to look beyond the DJ circuit.
UK funky is often discussed as a purely historical phenomenon, but it never truly died. The genre grew, and changed, and many now making it / influenced by it don't explicitly call themselves funky, but it's in their DNA.
My latest for @ninaprotocol. https://t.co/YYEbNlafHw
My favorite thing about the hit em phenomenon is how much it's reminded me that the internet, on occasion, can still be a legitimately joyous and fun place. @bromf3 asked me to share a few other thoughts on this nascent genre in his latest piece for @stereogum.
This isn’t the first and surely won’t be the last piece on hit em, but for @stereogum I dug deeper into the world of Internet microgenres and talked to @ShawnReynaldo and @jetskitosway2 about why a genre invented in an dream might’ve blown up so fast. https://t.co/zxKcwXSkpo
Today's newsletter features a special guest recommendation from the ultra-versatile, genre-blurring, modular-building NYC producer @braillesounds, who shares a track that first blew his mind more than two decades ago.
No journalist is more dedicated to documenting the most fried corners of online music + culture than @kieranpressreyn, which is why it's such a pleasure to have him contribute a guest recommendation to today's First Floor.
p.s. Brazilian funk fiends won't want to miss this one.
When it comes to good taste, it's hard to top that of Yu Su (@yuyuyvr), who knows her way around both food and records. That's why it's so exciting to have her share a special guest recommendation in the latest First Floor newsletter.
@sachi_ambient Hello there. Just so you know, I wrote that recommendation. Nyksan just recommended one song, but I did the entire "Just This Week" section of the newsletter.
Feeling very lucky that @tratratrax co-founder @nyksan_ agreed to put together a guest recommendation for today's First Floor digest. He picked a real good tune too, so check out the newsletter online - you can find the link in the usual spot.
