My daughter and I made a 4-hour journey from the little town of Ithaca where I live to New Jersey just to watch Swatantryaveer Savarkar. It rained all the way; it was the dreariest day ever. A kind friend offered to take us in for the night after the movie. It rained so much that flood alerts were issued, so we had to stay one more day. As I told myself, this was the least one could do to honor the memory of one of the greatest patriots the world has ever seen.

I was prepared to overlook every flaw in the movie simply because gratitude for the act of making the film overshadowed every other sentiment. But, to my surprise, first-time director @RandeepHooda who scripted and produced the film did a commendable job with the treatment of the subject. On top of that, he himself played the lead role. I cannot for the life of me think of how a strapping, well-built man starved to lose 32 kg in order to portray the perfect Savarkar enduring the rigors of Cellular Jail but also directed the movie in that condition! In interviews, he has spoken of how he fainted and fell many times while making the movie. This is an unbelievable level of dedication.

As many have commented, Randeep was unrecognizable in the movie - it felt as if Savarkar had miraculously been captured on film for all of us to see. However, I could not bear to see the scenes where he was thrashed, kicked and pushed by the brutal jailer. I just had to avert my eyes. That bleeding wound in my heart cannot bear any more enlargement. I can only wonder at those heartless people who mock him for the petitions he wrote to free dozens of prisoners in the brutal prison along with himself.

Some of the well-written scenes in the movie include that of the jailed Savarkar brothers meeting Yamunabai and Dr Narayan Savarkar in the prison. Vinayak’s spectacles had been knocked off by the jailer so he could only get a blurred view of his family members. And in another scene when Narayan said Gandhi would soon be writing a petition to free them, the look of bewilderment on VD Savarkar’s face followed by the line “Achha Gandhi itna bada ho gaya hai kya?” was outstanding. So much was conveyed by this line. Puny men are sometimes turned into poster boys by the powers that be while the lives of real leaders take time to get revealed.

The hangings of Indian revolutionaries such as Madanlal Dhingra, Khudiram Bose, Bhagat Singh and others were shown aeshetically. The famous photos of Nehru laughing exuberantly with the Mountbattens and Gandhi conveying similar comfort levels with the colonizers were excellently re-created. Images that tell us so much more than entire books can.

However, I have one little aching regret – that @vikramsampath was not involved in the making of this movie. Even though scores of books have written on Savarkar in the past and the national archives have great material about the man, we cannot deny that it is Vikram who made large numbers of us in current times aware about the contributions of Savarkar. Those who are not from Maharashtra, and those who have studied in English-medium schools and colleges did not know much about Savarkar until Vikram wrote two voluminous books on the life and travails of the great man - it is one of the finest biographies ever written. I am sure Vikram would have generously helped with inputs about the main messages from Savarkar’s life and not expected a humongous fee.

Some of the things I learned from Vikram’s book, which could probably have been included in the movie are:
1. His ceaseless petitioning led to a change in management of the barbaric Cellular Jail. He did not rest till they allowed classes to be held in jail and set up a library. He insisted that every prisoner should know languages other than the mother tongue and began to teach Hindi to the Bengali, Maharastrian & Punjabi prisoners. He even taught Gurmukhi to illiterate Punjabis! He made a Muslim teach him the Quran. Savarkar kept badgering the authorities until the library was well stocked with books and became one of the model prison libraries! He would insist that after reading a book, people should make summaries and discuss whatever they read. For the first time prisoners in the dreaded Andamans spent their time “productively in teaching, learning, spiritual pursuits and reading books”.

2. In the movie not much was shown about what Savarkar did after being released from 27 years of captivity. But actually, Savarkar played an active role in getting Hindus their rights in Hyderabad when it was under the Nizam. Under the vile Nizam, Hindus were asked to celebrate their festivals strictly in the confines of their homes. They were disenfranchised from civil services. Urdu was made the official language even though only 10% of the population spoke the language. Ruffians were asked to harass the Hindus. There was major rioting. Heeding Savarkar’s call, large numbers of people from Hindu Mahasabha and other Hindu organizations in Poona made their way to Hyderabad from 1938 onwards. Hindu students of Osmania Univ defied authorities and sang Vande Mataram on the campus. They were rusticated. Savarkar bombarded the Nizam with letters to take action on Hindu demands. At his behest 1000s of Hindu Mahasabha volunteers poured into Hyd. They were brutally assaulted by Nizam’s police. Congress kept discouraging the volunteers & spreading rumors. Jails in Hyd got full. Can you imagine that in erstwhile Hyderabad, a Hindu could not celebrate his marriage if it coincided with a Muslim festival?! The massive protest by Hindu Mahasabha & pressure from other quarters led the Nizam agree to meet many of the Hindu demands on 19 July 1939.

I feel that Vikram Sampath’s inputs would have helped to frame Savarkar’s messages even more clearly. However, all said and done, we still owe a huge debt of gratitude to Randeep Hooda and everyone who helped him to bring to life the one and only Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
