I'm sure this is the commander player in me, but if someone in your playgroup loves to phase their stuff out, this seems like the perfect answer. If I understand things correctly, their phased out stuff can just permanently never phase in.
Being pro-choice is when you imagine an impossible scenario where someone you hate does something you want to do, thereby proving you right in your own imagination.
@hARAIN_MTG Isn’t ponder the better pure cantrip because you can grab a 4th cards, but Brainstorm is often more powerful because of the hand filtering when combined with fetch lands?
Brainstorm is often also better cast in the main phase, though I cannot remember why.
@MTGO_Economics I think part of that is because the two terms overlap so much. Engine decks build engines to get more resources than the opponent. Also, people like Engine Deck formats (Pauper)
@Mengu09 Any chance you guys can showcase a Lotus Vale Combo deck? I love Lotus Field Combo in Pioneer and lands are so fun. Scorched Ruins would also work.
@SaffronOlive But also isn't Flashback an engine deck? You have tutors to set up your cheap card draw and 6/6s. And a Merfolk looter to grind your way through?
@SaffronOlive I’ve seen that a lot watching the best standard decks of all time series.
It hurt seeing Rhinos go like that. Please put it in the loser bracket list if possible.
But when I initially hear engine of an Engine deck I think of Tatyova Benthic druid as a prime engine card. I half wonder if we're all wrong in longing for an era of magic where it was a resource game.
I could be wrong but I think Pauper might be a really good example of this? When I think of the Pauper decks I see a lot of them are often about building / using some engine to grind advantage and then win with that.
Deadly Dispute and Ichor Wellspring are a famous example.
I think the fundamental change in Magic over its lifespan is that it was originally a resource management game but over time and for a whole bunch of reasons it evolved into an engine building game.
In a further hot take, most commander players that complain online really long for a time when they were worse at the game. Instead they should build objectively bad decks and pilot them better. The best decks are ones where you can run commander’s sphere and not hate life.
