Former Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio breaks down why the Kalayaan Island Group has always been Philippine territory - grounded in historical occupation, the Treaties of Paris and Washington, and reinforced by RA 9522, the Maritime Zones Act, and the Archipelagic Sea Lanes law. He also explains how the West Philippine Seaโs metes and bounds were deposited with the United Nations.
We address disinformation, including claims amplified by Sen. Marcoleta and others, and how facts and law dismantle false narratives.
Justice Carpio is clear: if the debate continues, it comes down to two core points.
Clear facts. Legal record. No spin.

Ukraine just took the war deep into Russian territory with a massive drone strike on the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, the largest oil transshipment hub on Russia's Baltic Sea coast. While the physical destruction is significant, the timing and location of this strike carry the heaviest weight.
The drones struck precisely on the opening morning of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. This event is Vladimir Putin's premier annual showcase to convince global investors and foreign delegates that Russiaโs economy is stable, secure, and thriving despite international sanctions. Instead of a polished economic display, arriving international delegates were greeted by massive plumes of thick black smoke rising over the city's skyline.
The immediate fallout paralyzed the city's logistics, freezing the airspace over Pulkovo Airport and forcing the delay or diversion of at least 30 flights. Economically, the strike hits a facility that handles roughly 12.5 million metric tons of petroleum products annually, targeting the very petrodollars that fund the Russian military budget. Psychologically, it shatters the illusion of safety for a major population hub located 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, proving that no economic center is out of reach.
President Zelenskyy has framed these operations as long-range sanctions. By simultaneously hitting this critical energy infrastructure and a guided-missile corvette at the nearby Kronstadt naval base, Kyiv is sending a clear message that if Russia continues to destroy Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, Ukraine will systematically dismantle the economic engine funding the invasion.
Given that the Philippines has been forced to explore alternative, discounted energy channels to cope with this year's inflation spikes, do you think this strike will finally push local policymakers to completely abandon the idea of sourcing cheaper Russian fuel, or will the domestic economic pressure force them to take the gamble anyway?
The burgeoning Philippine-Japan alliance represents one of the most consequential cases of middle power cooperation in the 21st century. Instead of helplessly musing over American strategic commitment and passively succumbing to China's growing geopolitical assertiveness, both middle powers are eager to take their strategic faith into their own hands,โ my latest for @NikkeiAsia

The Philippine Navy achieved a milestone in maritime interoperability with the successful conduct of its first-ever Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP) operation involving an embarked AW109 naval helicopter and a United States Coast Guard cutter during the PhilippinesโUnited States Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (BMCA) conducted from May 27 to 30, 2026 in the vicinity of Bajo de Masinloc.
The activity was carried out on May 30, 2026 by BRP Antonio Luna (FFG15) and its embarked AW109 helicopter (NH434) in coordination with USCGC Midgett (WMSL-757), which demonstrated the growing capability of both maritime forces to conduct integrated aviation and logistics operations at sea
The PN's AW109 helicopter also conducted three touch-and-go aboard USCGC Midgett as part of a Cross-Deck Landing Exercise which validated the aircraft's capability to safely operate from an allied flight deck. Following the successful deck landing qualification, the helicopter executed the VERTREP mission by transferring a 50-kilogram external load using a cargo net and sling system.
The activity highlighted the interoperability between the Philippine Navy and the United States Coast Guard while contributing to enhanced maritime domain awareness, logistics coordination, and cooperative maritime security efforts.
As the Philippine Navy continues to modernize and strengthen its capabilities, engagements such as the PH-US BMCA provide opportunities to improve operational effectiveness and deepen cooperation with like-minded partners in support of a secure, stable, and rules-based maritime environment.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. reacts to a report that he and his family have allegedly been barred from entering China.
โWala akong assets sa China at wala akong balak pumunta doon. Gusto ko man dumalaw dahil masarap ang pagkain at mababait ang mga tao, pero natatabunan ito sa klase ng gobyerno na meron sila,โ Teodoro tells reporters in Cagayan de Oro City.
The reported move allegedly stemmed from the May 15 raid on Philippine Sanjia Steel Corporation in Misamis Oriental, where 69 Chinese nationals were found handling harmful or noxious materials. @ABSCBNNews
PS: This is leadership worth recognizing. By opening formal talks, President @bongbongmarcos and PM @takaichi_sanae have provided yet another example of how legitimate maritime overlaps should be settled โ exactly as UNCLOS envisions, in good faith and free of coercion.
China calls the JapanโPhilippines maritime boundary talks โillegal, null and void.โ UNCLOS says otherwise.
Articles 74(1) and 83(1) of UNCLOS provide that EEZ and continental shelf boundaries between States with opposite or adjacent coasts โshall be effected by agreementโ based on international law, to achieve an equitable solution. Negotiation is, therefore, not some unlawful maneuver. It is the very process UNCLOS expects coastal States to pursue. What UNCLOS does not permit is the use of coercion to impose excessive or unlawful maritime claims.
The maritime space at issue is generated by Japanese and Philippine land territories: the Nansei/Sakishima island chain on Japanโs side, and Batanes and Luzon on the Philippine side. Under UNCLOS, maritime entitlements flow from land coasts, not from arbitrarily drawn dashed lines or domestic legislation.
Chinaโs objection ultimately depends on its claim over Taiwan โ which, IN REALITY, IS NOT UNDER PRC's effective control. But even taking Beijingโs position at its highest, China would be, at most, a potential third party whose claimed interests may be reserved. It would not become a gatekeeper over JapanโPhilippines delimitation talks.
China may state its position and reserve whatever rights it believes it has. What it cannot do is manufacture a veto. The talks are lawful. Beijingโs โnull and voidโ claim has no serious basis.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Wednesday said the Senateโs lack of quorum has affected the ratification of the Philippinesโ Status of Visiting Forces Agreements (SOVFA) with Canada and New Zealand, which are awaiting Senate concurrence.
