Our kettle lakes are part of the less than 1% of natural land left in Indiana—vital to the quality of our air & water & to the health of our wildlife & people.
Our kettle lakes consist of many high quality natural areas virtually unchanged since before European settlement in America. They are part of the less than 1% of natural land left in Indiana—vital to the quality of our air & water and to the health of our wildlife & people.
Happy World Wildlife Day! Habitat destruction is why so many species go extinct. In Indiana less than 1% of our natural land remains. Our kettle lakes are so special because they are part of the few remaining diverse habitats that support a wide variety of plant & animal species.
Thaddeus Lipinski & his colleagues at Notre Dame’s College of Science have been tracking frog populations at Lydick Bog Nature Preserve since 2022. Check out his recent article about their findings. —>

👀Pussy Willow at Lydick Bog. An old story says a willow was watching kittens play along a stream. They tumbled in and the willow bent down her branches. Happy to be rescued, they hugged the willow. Ever since, the willow sprouts fur-like buds where the kittens once clung.
Eagles at @SJCoParks are rebuilding after their nest totally collapsed. New Buffalo resurrected its dune walk. Lydick Bog added a deck. And good news about East Bank Trail. @SBTribune@HeinzeTrust@sbvpa https://t.co/PS1nq0sJtw
Wolffiella gladiata discovered at Twin Lakes – a free floating aquatic plant with no roots. 3-9mm long & often found in star-like clusters. So far it has been documented in 3 of our kettle lakes.

On June 27, a bald eaglet (ND17) fell out of the nest at @NDLEEF. ND17 was brought to Humane Indiana Wildlife for an eval where it was determined that the eaglet was dehydrated & malnourished.
After 21 days, ND17 was released at ND-LEEF.
Watch its first flight in the wild! 🦅
