Delighted to say I have been elected Chair of the City of Evanston's Historic Preservation Commission. Thank you to my fellow Commissioners for putting your trust in me. Will continue advocating for equity, climate resilience, and support for homeowners.
@AshleyGardini @JSTOR_Daily They read an excerpt from the intro for Metabolism: The Proposals for New Urbanism (Kikutake, et al). I also assigned a few short videos because I think those give a sense of the spatial qualities in a way that drawings and photos don't. It was a good discussion.
@AshleyGardini @JSTOR_Daily Congrats, Ashley. So glad you've started with JSTOR Daily and chose this as your first topic. Happens that I *just* ran an entire discussion section focused entirely on this building. Next semester, I'll add your column to the reading list!
As communities grapple with what to do with crumbling concrete façades and leaking steel windows, they’re also revisiting the bold progressive agendas originally promised by the unapologetically Modern buildings. From @SMDreller: https://t.co/2tIfTXCvId #architecture
A suggestion has been made that J. B. Jackson’s life and work might equally be considered within the context of hodology. Introducing “The Where We Were,” a new column from @SMDreller on the spaces, places, and people that shape us. https://t.co/d0VoDuWsXC #architecture
J. B. Jackson fixed his attention on the modest world of regular people instead of the privileged environments of high-style architecture. Introducing “The Where We Were,” a new column from @SMDreller on the spaces, places, and people that shape us. https://t.co/d0VoDuWsXC
@landmarksill@GovPritzker Such wonderful news! I know everyone at Landmarks has worked so hard for so long to get to this point. Congratulations and thank you!
Thrilled to hear @GovPritzker selected a developer that plans to reuse the blg! We have long advocated for preservation of the Helmut Jahn-designed Thompson Center, & we look forward to learning more about the reuse design and assisting the development team wherever possible.
@AshleyGardini Apologies for the delayed response; back here after some much-needed time away. Thank you for your kind words, Ashley. The project was lucky to have your contribution & I always appreciated your honest support. Hope we can collaborate again soon!
Just learning the #SAHDataProject final report was published this morning. Congrats @SAH1365. Seeing the cover for the first time--looks sharp! Eager to dive in at some point soon. Really hoping this data helps some of you now & improves things for future arch historians, too.
The Society of Architectural Historians announces the publication of the #SAHDataProject Report, the first in-depth, data-driven study designed to access the health of the field of architectural history in the U.S. https://t.co/9hr9HUGPvm

@kramermj @USCPullias@jeremycyoung@MittelstadtJen@SuzMKahn @lisalevenstein @SFNDHE@rbthisted Only trying to gently suggest the value of additional data & goals. New mothers, chronically ill people, folks taking care of elder parents, underpaid museum professionals need pay equity, not a FT teaching job. They can't speak up publicly but I hear from them privately *a lot*.
@rbthisted @kramermj @USCPullias@jeremycyoung@MittelstadtJen@SuzMKahn @lisalevenstein @SFNDHE The largest % in the humanities is for no FT job available, but it's still less than half of everyone. That's roughly what our research found, too. Agree re family responsibilities. Would be worth exploring. Possible it overlaps with did not need or want to work more?
@kramermj @USCPullias@jeremycyoung@MittelstadtJen@SuzMKahn @lisalevenstein @SFNDHE@rbthisted Adjuncts are definitely exploited. No question. I know from decades of personal experience & agree change is needed ASAP. But a lot of adjuncts have shared details w me privately. Making their positions FT would be bad for them. If we have data about this, I'd love to see it.
It's World Space Week and the theme is women in space! To celebrate, I'm going to tweet about the women of the Voyager Golden Records. The Voyager 1 and 2 deep space probes were launched in 1977 and are currently outside the solar system. https://t.co/PQQxopYxVk @WorldSpaceWeek
@kramermj @USCPullias@jeremycyoung@MittelstadtJen@SuzMKahn @lisalevenstein @SFNDHE@rbthisted I've always assumed that this was the original idea behind adjuncting, too. Anyway, I was asking abt data. Giving students the chance to learn directly from non-ac & alt-ac professionals can have huge social justice benefits. How often are adjunct positions used for that purpose?
@kramermj @USCPullias@jeremycyoung@MittelstadtJen@SuzMKahn @lisalevenstein @SFNDHE@rbthisted Also interested in data from students who take classes with humanities adjuncts that have full-time non-academic jobs (curatorial, grant-making, programming, etc). Any evidence that bringing real-world experience into the classroom inspires students to stay in the humanities?
@kramermj @USCPullias@jeremycyoung@MittelstadtJen@SuzMKahn @lisalevenstein @SFNDHE@rbthisted Very interesting direction! Any data about people who use adjuncting to keep working when they can't be FT due to family care-giving duties, chronic illness/disability, etc? Could be a small % but, for them, extremely important financially & emotionally.
