Visuals are always good and I also like to give choices. Right now I have “break cards” for a student when he feels himself escalating. Work still has to be done but a break can be given to calm down.
Having a relationship with students is important so you can know which tool to use...getting on their “level” and listening to understand their POV is one tool I use.
