DARJEELING & KALIMPONG HOMESTAYS TO FACE GROUND-ZERO CHECKS

◆ Bengal is preparing a new homestay tourism policy for the hills.

◆ Darjeeling & Kalimpong administrations will conduct ground-zero assessments of homestays operating under the GTA.

◆ A statewide online registration system for homestays is also being introduced.

◆ Guest identity, registration records and homestay registration status will be checked.

◆ Around 1,180 homestays are operational in Kalimpong.

◆ The move follows the September 20 Sittong homestay barbecue-fire incident, in which a woman tourist was injured.

◆ The state is also looking at traffic congestion, waste management and drinking-water issues in Darjeeling.

◆ Five ropeway routes are under consideration in the Darjeeling hills to address traffic congestion.

◆ Tourism initiatives are planned around Mirik and Mungpoo, including vintage car rallies, adventure tourism, paragliding and rafting.

◆ Cinchona and medicinal plantations in Mungpoo are also being considered as tourism attractions.

◆ Darjeeling is planned to be illuminated during the festive season, alongside cultural programmes.

◆ The Union government has allocated ₹57 crore for tourism development in West Bengal, according to the state tourism minister.

Haider Ali (34), a driver in the District Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Office in Hailakandi, Assam created a fake Facebook account as Rahul, ‘Rahul Rdx’ and sent friend requests to multiple Hindu girls of the district.

Haider Ali trapped a Hindu girl with his fake Hindu identity and established a physical relationship with her. He then took many videos and photographs and started blackmailing her.

He is married and has two children.
He was posing as a Hindu bachelor and maintaining a relationship with many Hindu women only to deceive them later.

Haider Ali was arrested in Apr 2026.
