With 1m in endorsements and the previously noted RCA loophole I agree the amounts would be equal still slightly shaded to us but marginal.
However there are caveats which need to be noted. First you have to defer up to 50% of your earnings at a time when your expenses are highest (house, young family, travel). Not the biggest deal for high earners but tougher for the 1-3.5m guys. Also you still need endorsements beyond whats available elsewhere, meaning more work and more commitment than playing elsewhere.
Ill admit its a lot more fair than I thought and I am now firmly on the train of making no accommodations for the Canadian teams to level it out lol.
This is interesting and I had not heard of this so I did some research and I agree this is a real balancing act no-one talks about. There are downsides like not controlling your own money and it is somehow actually worse for you if you continue to be Canadian resident vs us player. Based on what I read and the estimations I would agree that this strategy would cover about 50% of the gap cause by the base tax differences.
This was fully accounted for in my calculations. The jock tax really only applies in California, illinois and NY it is minimal or non impactful in other states. For a florida team who plays California teams in state 2x a year and Illinois teams 1-2x a year in Illinois it is very low impact vs their base florida rate. I used the lower end of the tax range for the Canadian players and the upper range for the florida players to offset this. If you would like I can break it down based on last years schedule to show you.
I feel nothing for them. Walking around all high and mighty like they have proved anything. This goes for all Canadian teams constantly pumping their chests like they have some cloak of invincibility. Canada hasn’t won a cup in 33 years and counting. Let’s stop pretending like the old guard has proven anything in the era of modern hockey and show them the lack of respect they deserve.
Because Matthews is a touch hockey player who requires a premier setup man to score even in the regular season. In the playoffs as has been proven Matthews is a pawn on the board with no ability to throw his body or absorb contact and play through. So its not closed because of their age, its closed because the team is not constructed to win a Stanley cup. Post Marner they will continue to be lucky to make the playoffs.
There is a non zero chance of an unknown asteroid hitting earth tomorrow, there is a non zero chance of Canada becoming the 51st state. There is a non zero chance of Canada winning their first cup in 34 years. Lots of non zero chances out there but 99.9% chance of any of these not happening is a safer bet ;)
So he didn’t score much. You going to say 2025 mcdavid didn’t leave it all on the ice in the finals because he had 2 points? You going to say McKinnon quit on his team cause he got hurt. Gtfoh loser, use your eyes watch the games and tell me he didn’t care. People like you just another example of why it sucks to be a pro athlete in Canada
@podgoalzin17 Writing something this stupid with no sources to back you is coward shit. You think mid series he went in and said trade me. Gtfoh and enjoy another season of losing in Edmonton.
Well Let’s be clear the only reason brexit passed was mass upheaval in the streets. Then the politicians usurped the will of the people and only half cocked implemented it. Then the leaders decided they will all still do the exact same things killing it. So sure pretend the will of the people was followed but that’s not true. May you forget king of all globalists mark carney basically bankrupt the country trying to choke the life out of brexit
@berezin_goal Imagine being a loser in Canada and not sniffing the cup this century. Must be so hard to keep making these posts and watching your precious Canadian teams fold like matchsticks the second there is one ounce of pressure
Please explain the wealth one to me .because exchange rate has nothing to do with it in any way. Let's use Ottawa taxes as an example with Brady.....
On average a player in Ottawa is paying ~53.5% of their salary to taxes so they KEEP $3.9–$4m
In Florida that same player is paying ~37% but likely less with investments etc. They keep a minimum of $5.2-5.25m
This means someone playing in Florida makes ~1.3m more per year than someone on Ottawa at a base level. To make up that gap with endorsements the Ottawa player needs 2.8-2.9m in additional endorsements beyond their salary to make the same money. Thats more time away from their family, more responsibility, more pressure for the same money.
Now add the weather, lifestyle of Florida living, and decent level of anonymity and it really adds up. Also let's not act like star players don't get endorsements in places which win Stanley cups. There are several current players with endorsement deals both locally and nationally.
I dont see an argument where the money is the same but if you do please lay it out for me
Correct and players hate the Canadian hockey culture which is my point. No one wants to be obsessed over game in and game out. Have 3 shows a day talking about what they did for lunch, how long it took them to get dressed etc etc. Change that and you will stop losing players. It's ok to be fans even fanatical but Canada is different level than anything I have seen and you can blame players who can go win championships, keep more of their money, not have shitty weather, and have relatively normal lives outside of hockey. Canada has nothing to offer and no cups 34 years and counting says a LOT!
Salty Canadian fans watching 34 years in counting no cups...... Create a society and system which entices people to want to be there and this will stop happening. People are really going to cry when we snag Hellebuyck for a bag of chips and 2 sodas and somehow get Winnipeg to retain half the salary.
Ah yea "casual fan" who played AAA hockey for 10 years has a cousin in NHL but hey what do I know lmao....... They get in florida everything they need. good weather, good schools for their children, a relevant culture their families want to live in. A team who is relevant and likely contenders for the next 4 cups and have been in 3 of last 4 finals.
Believe it or not beyond you little mind, players do not care about cultural relevance. When my cousin left the Canadian team he played for, he said it was the best day of his life being able to go to dinner and not be bothered for 10 pictures and autographs. To be able to drive his car without people taking pictures of him and his family everywhere they went. What you see as "glory" most players see as misery once the shine wears off. Local endorsement deals are laughable except for the very few and only last until the fans turn on everyone on every team like they always do. No ones wants to live or play under a microscope. Canidians are obsessively passionate to pa point people want out. Look at Marner who flourished when leaving Toronto as Matthews faded. Remember Toronto fans throwing their jerseys on the ice in disgust because their team took the cahamps to game 7. Remember the fans booing the Senators game after game. it all adds up
