Let me explain x402 and ERC-8004 because I keep seeing these pop up, and people seem confused about what they actually do
The Background:
Back in 1997, HTTP reserved the 402 status code for "Payment Required" but it was never implemented. For almost 30 years, we've had this placeholder sitting there unused.
x402 finally activates it.
What x402 Actually Does:
Right now, accessing paid services online means:
๐น Payment processors taking their cut
๐น Filling out checkout forms
๐น Managing subscriptions you forget to cancel
๐น Dealing with payment friction everywhere
x402 removes that friction by enabling:
๐ธ Direct, automatic micropayments between any two entities
๐ธ Instant transactions via stablecoins like USDC when you hit a paywall
๐ธ No middlemen, no checkout pages, just direct transactions
Potential Use Cases:
๐น Pay-per-use APIs without subscription models
๐น Content monetization without platforms taking 30% cuts
๐น Services transacting with each other automatically
๐น Viable micropayments with minimal processing overhead
The Trust Problem:
If everything can transact automatically, how do you establish trust? How do you know who you're dealing with?
Enter ERC-8004:
ERC-8004 is an Ethereum proposal that creates an identity and reputation system where:
๐ธ Every entity gets an on-chain identity with verifiable track record
๐ธ Functions like credit score + identity verification + capability certification
๐ธ Everything is public, transparent, and recorded on blockchain
๐ธ You can verify who you're transacting with before money changes hands
How They Work Together:
๐น x402 = payment rails
๐น ERC-8004 = trust layer
๐น Combined = infrastructure for direct, frictionless transactions with built-in verification
My Actual Take:
Here's the thing - yes, this is useful infrastructure. But let's be real about something:
Right now in web3, this is being heavily marketed around AI agents and autonomous AI economies. And that's a problem.
Why This Concerns Me:
๐ธ When the AI bubble eventually bursts (and it will), this gets dragged down with it
๐ธ Unless x402 gets adopted for generalized use cases beyond "AI agents paying each other," it's in trouble
๐ธ The technology itself is solid and could help regular web services, content creators, API providers, etc.
๐ธ But if it stays pigeonholed as "AI infrastructure," it's toast
The Timeline:
๐น August 2025: ERC-8004 proposed on Ethereum
๐น September 2025: Google and Coinbase announced x402
๐น Sept 23, 2025: Cloudflare joined to launch x402 Foundation
Bottom Line:
Is this groundbreaking? Not really.
It's good infrastructure that solves real problems around payment friction and trust verification. But whether it actually gets adopted widely or becomes another web3 thing that sounded good on paper depends entirely on whether it can break free from the AI hype cycle.
Worth keeping an eye on, but I'm not holding my breath.
@Polls26WB@SuvenduWB@swapan55@sanjeevsanyal@tathagata2 What?
You said
This land has been identified since ancient times as Bengal
To that I corrected you that it has been Banga.
So instead we should go for Banga not Bengal, and if we care how the world knows us and not how we identify then we should just stick to WB
@theswapnilsri Who is going to pay for the starlink monthly? $55 per month lowest in usa how low will they go here? $30?
If people can't afford $5 then they are not affording $30.
You all are very effectively looking past the cost I've noticed.
@elonmusk@Starlink How? Are you going to price it below $5 a month?
This is so dumb and such a white savior complex.
You are serving the rich and the terrorists nobody else.
Russia creates a sufficiently limited/ambiguous incident that NATO cannot reach a common political response, while a subset of European states responds militarily on its own and gets their asses handed back to them and Rus escalates Ukraine.
A US frontier AI lab (TypeSafe AI) just announced a "breakthrough" System 1 architecture. The problem? An independent Indian developer built, published, and open-sourced the exact same single-pass RL architecture a full year ago.
The frontier lab generalized it, slapped a new acronym on it, and claimed it as a novel invention. The open-source community keeps doing the heavy lifting in the shadows. This is why we need to be wary of corporates!
