Professor, @uwjsis. Post-Soviet politics, conspiracy theories, dis/misinfo; author of Revealing Schemes & Enemies Within: Global Politics of Fifth Columns
Conspiracy theories after an assassination attempt? In America? The most predictable thing imaginable. I gave an interview about this for @guardian

@UWJSIS@uwcip
I wrote a piece for @LSEUSAblog summarizing my new article in @PoPpublicsphere on how there was once a powerful coalition devoted to countering mis/disinformation, and how opponents of that coalition prevailed.

What if conspiracy theories were taken to their logical endpoint and put into practice as a form of governance? @MertCanBayar and I explore this question in our new article on the conspiracist theory of power in @CogitatioPaG@uwcip

My article on the stakes around mis/disinformation controversies is finally out at @PoPpublicsphere.
It is the product of my work at @EUI_EU and @EUI_Schuman.
In a nutshell: Debates about misinformation are also contests over authority. How to make sense of these contests?

My new article with @KarceskiSteven and @YahsiaoYuan. Can a politician claim disinformation to escape accountability? We sought to find out.
I have a new article out in Information, Communication, and Society, co-authored with @YahsiaoYuan.
People are exposed to various claims about disinformation online, and maybe they believe those claims. But most studies present this info disembodied.

Does it matter who is claiming disinfo, and who is supposedly spreading it? And how does that interact with prior beliefs? We conducted survey experiments in the US and Taiwan, randomly varying the identities of the claimant and source of disinfo.
There is nothing inherently menacing or antidemocratic about conspiracy theories. They can even be a source of amusement. The trouble comes when political elites weaponize them to invite violence. @SRadnitz

"A second notable element of the [Beslan] speech is that it reflected a scaling up of the explanation of the attack...The speech heightened the sense that Russia’s challenges extended beyond the bands of militants it had been battling, mostly successfully, since 1999.
