"But the people’s sense of justice is also a political power, and we shall not cease to appeal to this sense of justice."

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

@mattyglesias But this also supposes that only the Directors and Bonaparte could act; both the Directory and Bonaparte were constantly dealing with Neo-Jacobin threats. If the directory doesn’t act, and a constitutional monarchy is installed, Augereau or Bernadotte or Moreau does a coup.

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

@mattyglesias Unlike in 1871, though, the monarchists of the Directory were all united around one man, and one smart man at that. 1871 saw a division between the Bonapartists, Orleanists, and Legitimists; without the Directors, the monarchists of the 1790s would all welcome Louis XVIII.

I find it hard to imagine a dumber plan for an era where computer programming is key to warfare then banning trans people and weird people.

No fatties.
No trannies.
No beardos.
No weirdoes.
No wimps.
No radicals — JUST WARRIORS.

My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery.

Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster.

He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals.

I wish Captain Machchhar a speedy and full recovery.

He is a true hero.

@WASPmexicano A lot of the rhetoric over 1688 is also that the British don’t want to admit they were invaded. I mean, the British eventually consented to it at all, but 20,000 Dutch troops took strategic points and set up occupation duty as a London garrison. I’d call that “conquest.”

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

@LiteralSheridan Frankly the stories I’ve heard from folks who went to do JAG stuff after law school is that a lot of their job is helping twenty-two years old divorce the stripper they married.

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

@JacobL1994_ What explains what happened to the EAF pilots in 73 after the SAM umbrella wasn’t available? They weren’t incompetent or untrained and those were fine planes. The IAF just smoked them, though.

@kennethhite @St_Rev Buffy had five seasons in the 21st century! It’s gotta be there.

The technical term for what happened to Naples in 1799 is “embarrassingly humiliated”.

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

Yeah, what happened next? What happened to the Neapolitans for the next sixteen years?

[Western Exile @westernexile]

A polite reminder that in 1799, volunteer armies of Royalist and Catholic Neapolitans overthrew a Masonic republic in Naples, and then Rome herself just months later.

These men inspired Horatio Nelson himself, who defied London to aid them.

It can be done.

Notably there was actually Muslim SS units, from Bosnia, who actually after the war went to fight against the Israelis. And the Germans and Italians backed Arab coups against the British which then did pogroms against Jews, most successfully in Iraq.

[UN Watch @UNWatch]

Holocaust Distortion from U.N. “Expert”: Francesca Albanese claims Jews in Nazi death camps “were called Muslims.” Antisemitism targets “Semitic peoples” and “not just discrimination against Jews.”

Even in Nazi death camps: She cannot name Jew-hatred without replacing the Jews.

Obviously Hitler was dumb as shit but he was really, really dumb. How could he think the SOVIET UNION, which had spent the last twenty years industrializing, and almost half of that actively at war on some front or another, would not have tanks?

[WW2 The Eastern Front @ShoahUkraine]

Hitler had no fucking idea this was being recorded.

June 4, 1942. Talking privately with Mannerheim, he admitted Soviet tank strength had taken him by surprise:

" I did not think that possible. "

His ordinary speaking voice. Sound on.

@WASPmexicano I was on a seventh grade class trip to Philadelphia. They announced it during a baseball game. Loudest cheers I’ve ever heard.

@AlisonSomin Say what you will, but Hiroo Onoda was at least getting some fresh air. He didn't really have anything else going for him, but he did have that.

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

@FrankFuhrig @jimgeraghty @PhilWMagness There’s a whole joke about this in the latest Pynchon book, the Hitlerized version of the Internationale.

[Longest Arms @LongArmsPerk]

The fact the film is explicitly set at the very start of the outbreak, and serves as a backstory for what's essentially a boss enemy, means the viewer can turn the ending into an unambiguous victory by going home and playing a Resident Evil game.

@d08890 @aelfred_D Yeah but you know. If Jesus can be a lion he can be a lion voiced by Meryl Streep.

Director: “well, I’d say that the final cut!”

Disney Exec: “not so fast- first we have to run it by Pazuzu, the Demon that Eats Colors”

Pazuzu, the Demon that Eats Colors: “Delicious reds and greens! A feast for Pazuzu!”

[Sam Rutzick @SRutzick]

@kylekatarn95 @GunnerDobbins Traditionally it’s the guilt they feel over Krona

If you've ever taken a class on constitutional law, you know the "Lochner Era" was the period when SCOTUS was evil and supported the businessman's right to strangle puppies all day.

But they also banned race-based zoning in *1917* as an infringement on the freedom to contract.
