Happy to announce my review of Adam Marks' important book 'England and the Thirty Years' War' has been published with @britjnlmilhist, available here with open access: https://t.co/7iGldgJu0L
The first study to analyse the relationship between England and Sweden across the entire seventeenth century. It emphasises the importance of commerce and diplomacy working in tandem. https://t.co/Dm8vYMwIrv

Check out our latest biographies from the wonderful @Weegie_Graeme on John Gordon, 16th Earl of Sutherland [8473] and William Gordon, Lord Strathnaver [8474], Scottish nobles and colonels in Dutch service c. 1700. Read them here: https://t.co/PCqe7yHofE
For this #WorldBookDay I am happy to announce that I will be taking over as book reviews editor for @NauticalHistory's quarterly journal, The Mariner's Mirror! If you are a PhD or ECR involved in any aspect of maritime history please get in touch and circulate widely! ๐โ๏ธโต๏ธ๐
What an exciting year already! Thrilled to be holding two articles published in my two favorite journals,
@NorthernStudies & @NauticalHistory. If you've been dying to know about the Stuart-British officer corps in the 1620s or royalists at sea in the 1650s, here's your chance!
#OTD 1627 Naval Battle of Oliwa (part of the Polish-Swedish War between 1626-29) was won by Polish-Lithuanian forces led by Dutch admiral Arend Dickmann (who died during the battle). #History#OnThisDay#earlymodern
Check out my blog on Scottish soldier, poet, and language teacher John Wodroephe to learn how to say phrases like 'it is so cold I must study every morning in my bed,' in early modern French!

UPDATE: Sir John Swinton [256], Scot. officer in the Thirty Years' War, serving in Germany, the Dutch Republic, and as colonel of an English regiment in Denmark. He raised a regiment for Venice in 1630 but drowned off Goodwin Sands. Read about him here: https://t.co/4qwu8GhURr
NEW ENTRY: Henry Martin [8443], Scot. #privateer in #France. In Aug. 1675, Martin received royal protection from prosecution in Britain. In Nov. a case was lodged against him for the seizure of 60,000 rixdollars worth of goods back in 1674. Coincidental timing? I think not...
Question for my maritime/legal historian friends! A colleague has asked: in terms of confiscation what does the repeated phrase 'seized for the use of his Majestie and ther own' mean? Appears in a Scottish admiralty case, c. 1724/5. Can give more details if needed. Thank you!
NEW ENTRY created by @Weegie_Graeme: Sir Charles Graham [SSNE 8442], colonel in the Scots-Dutch Brigade, 1673-1695. He fought in the Highland War and was present at the negotiations over the capitulation of Diksmuide. Read about his lengthy career here: https://t.co/V0GvLPsBTf
In two years, Scottish researchers have had almost no access to the NRS. That a NATIONAL archive can't compete with the NLS or even the smallest of local archives in the Netherlands in terms of accessibility is insane. Ask me about my last disastrous appointment, I dare you...
Iโm about to publish a book on Anglo-Swedish trade & commercial diplomacy in C17 and I loooove Brit-Scan interaction in general
Wonderin if any seminars/conferences would let me tout my research and if anyone has any recs. Iโm out of practice.

#OnThisDay 30 July 1645 Alexander Leslie, Lord Leven and the Scots Covenanter army laid siege to Hereford, defended by Royalist Sir Barnabas Scudamore. Leven was forced to abandon the siege on news of Montrose's victory at Kilsyth in September. #BritishCivilWars#17thCentury#OTD
A very interesting blog on female book ownership and religious persecution in early modern Sweden, featuring Anna Elisabeth Leyell [SSNE 8122], a Scoto-Swede who also appears in our database! @WomensHistScot@universalstc
