Architect, Author, Photographer and New Urbanist @stevemouzon joins me to tell his story about the emergence of New Urbanism in a location that many would consider unlikely. Huntsville, Alabama might be known for Space Camp, but it’s not widely known as a place to find great urban design and architecture. And that’s a shame, because there’s more lessons to learn here for most cities than by flying to a big, coastal market.

Steve talks about the emergence of the Village of Providence in the early 2000s, its unique characteristics, and how that project also influenced the rebirth of downtown Huntsville. @Empty_America Dad's ancestors were Huguenot from Mouzon, France but were on the wrong side of a rebellion I don't know much about but had a simple choice: leave or die. So they left for Charleston, South Carolina, settling in Charleston's French Quarter for a couple generations.

@UrbanCourtyard Just be sure you post about it so people know when your latest post is up. Don’t burden yourself with a lot of post-processing steps. And by all means, get high-speed internet! Lacking that held me back for years because uploading was so painfully slow & often failed.

In Japan you will often see cafes and small shops with a small triangle shaped entrance cut into the front of the shop. The purpose is to soften the abrupt difference between shop interior and outside street and give customers a sheltered spot to sort out their umbrellas etc. It looks instantly welcoming and intimate. Here is a cozy cafe in Tokyo. The two chairs outside are for customers to wait their turn outside if the cafe is full. This is a tiny example of #GoodUrbanism on narrow streets and making the most of otherwise bland straight shop fronts.
