The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, has today opened a stakeholder consultative engagement bringing together engineers, university leaders, policy analysts, Government officials, and industry stakeholders to discuss the way forward in building EDiC into a sustainable national engineering centre of excellence.

The engagement is drawing on national and international experiences and expertise to shape EDiC’s institutional, technical, and commercial direction, with particular focus on evidence-based policy, commercialization, quality management and control, industry linkages, and Public-Private Partnerships.

“Engineering is no longer an option. Japan took it personally; its limited land mass pushed it to embrace science, technology, and innovation. There is no developed country that is not industrialized. We need to take engineering personally as a country,” the Hon. Minister emphasized.

He further called for strong systems across Uganda’s STI ecosystem to move innovations beyond ideas and prototypes into manufacturing and commercialization.

“We do not have time. In the next two years, we should be moving to countries such as Malawi and elsewhere, looking for bigger markets for our innovative products,” he said.

The engagement reflects the STI Secretariat’s drive to build a coordinated national engineering ecosystem capable of developing competitive Ugandan products, strengthening industrialization, expanding regional and international markets, and contributing to Uganda’s US$500 billion economy ambition by 2040.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, today visited the Mpoma Satellite Station to inspect the progress of the ongoing rehabilitation and modernization works aimed at revitalizing Uganda's satellite communication infrastructure and advancing the country's space science and technology capabilities.

During the visit, the Minister inspected the existing geostationary satellite antennas and reviewed the progress of the Phase II renovation works being implemented by the National Engineering Corporation (NEC), reaffirming Government's commitment to restoring the facility as a strategic national space asset.

The engagement underscored the importance of the timely commissioning of the Mpoma Satellite Station. With Phase II approaching completion and significant components of Phase III already delivered, the station is expected to strengthen Uganda's space infrastructure, expand satellite communication capabilities, support research and technology development, and accelerate the growth of the country's emerging space industry.

The Ministry is also advancing the policy, legal, and regulatory framework necessary to guide the sustainable development of Uganda's space sector. Once operational, the Mpoma Satellite Station will strengthen national satellite communication infrastructure, support satellite-enabled broadband connectivity, enhance strategic communications, contribute to national security, and position Uganda to leverage space technologies for scientific advancement, innovation, and socio-economic transformation.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, today attended the Olive School AI and Innovation Expo as the Chief Guest, where he interacted with learners, teachers, parents, and innovators showcasing the next generation of Ugandan talent.

The Expo featured an outstanding display of learner-led innovations developed under the guidance of teachers and mentors, highlighting how young people are harnessing artificial intelligence, robotics, science, engineering, and the creative arts to develop practical solutions to challenges facing our communities. The innovations ranged from plastic waste recycling technologies, hydraulic bridge systems, and solar-powered automotive solutions to robotics, digital design, painting, and other creative projects, reflecting the capability and problem-solving potential of Uganda's young innovators using AI.

Addressing learners, parents, and teachers, the Hon. Minister emphasized that artificial intelligence is here to make work easier, enhance productivity, and complement human potential, It's not to replace people. He encouraged the young innovators to pursue their ideas with confidence, stressing that innovation is not limited by age, nor is it reserved for a particular group of people. Every young mind has the potential to create solutions that can transform communities and contribute to national development.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki together with the STI Secretariat team, this evening presented completion certificates to the Ministry's Protégé team at the STI Secretariat Boardroom, marking the successful completion of a four-year mentorship and professional development programme under the guidance of senior scientists.

The ceremony celebrated the Protégés' contributions to Uganda's science, technology, and innovation agenda while providing an opportunity to reflect on their journey and discuss future collaboration in advancing research, innovation, and technology commercialization.

Congratulating the graduates, the Minister emphasized the importance of nurturing the next generation of scientists, noting that, "Investing in young scientific talent is investing in Uganda's future. I am confident you will continue transforming research into impactful products, enterprises, and industries that drive national development." Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki was quoted.

The Ministry commends the Protégés for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment throughout the programme and looks forward to their continued contribution to strengthening Uganda's science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, today closed the Second Annual Global Innovation Index (GII) Symposium, organised by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST).

In his remarks, the Minister noted that Uganda possesses the talent, research capacity, and innovative ideas required to drive national transformation. He emphasized that the country's priority is to translate research into protected intellectual property, commercially viable products, competitive enterprises, and globally competitive industries.

The Minister further observed that much of Uganda's weak performance in the Global Innovation Index stems not from weak innovation, but from unreported innovation. He called upon Ministries, Departments and Agencies, research institutions, academia, and the private sector to strengthen innovation data collection and reporting, noting that where achievements are not reported, they are neither measured nor recognised.

He reaffirmed that science, technology, and innovation are central to Uganda's industrial transformation and the attainment of a competitive upper middle income economy, underscoring the need to strengthen research investment, accelerate commercialization, and build a robust national innovation system in support of the Government's Ten-Fold Growth Strategy and Uganda's journey towards a US$500 billion economy by 2040.

Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, is this morning chairing a strategic planning and performance review session with the Ministry's Top Management and all STI Bureaus at the Ministry Boardroom to align priorities, implementation plans, and performance targets for the current Financial Year.

The session is evaluating bureau work plans, strategic interventions, key performance indicators, and deliverables to strengthen institutional coordination, enhance accountability, and ensure the effective execution of the Ministry's science, technology, and innovation mandate.

The review reflects the Ministry's commitment to accelerating research commercialization, technology-driven industrialization, innovation-led enterprise development, and value addition to drive import substitution, expand exports base, create high-value jobs, and advance the Government's Ten-Fold Growth Strategy.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, today welcomed a high-level delegation from the Kingdom of Eswatini led by Principal Secretary Thulani Mkhaliphi of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

The visit builds on the strong bilateral relationship between Uganda and the Kingdom of Eswatini, following the State Visit of His Majesty King Mswati III to Uganda and the successful Pearl to the Cape Expedition, during which the Kiira EV bus made a landmark stop in Eswatini. During that engagement, the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini expressed interest in procuring Ugandan-made electric buses and strengthening cooperation in electric mobility.

The delegation is undertaking a technical engagement with Kiira Motors Corporation to advance these discussions through a feasibility assessment while exploring opportunities for collaboration in developing sustainable electric mobility industries in both countries.

The Hon. Minister reaffirmed that science, technology, and innovation must translate into industrial partnerships, regional trade, technology transfer, job creation, and shared prosperity across Africa. He emphasized that Uganda is demonstrating the continent's growing capacity to design, manufacture, and export world-class technologies while strengthening African value chains and accelerating regional industrialization.

The Ministry welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation under the leadership of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and His Majesty King Mswati III in advancing an innovative, industrialized, and economically integrated Africa.

I met a delegation from Nonda Coffee Park led by Mr. Tonny Miiro Kibuuka, who briefed me on their plans to establish a coffee processing and value addition facility. I welcome this investment because it is exactly what we have always been advocating for.
Uganda should not continue exporting raw coffee. We must add value before export so that we create jobs, increase household incomes and earn more foreign exchange.
The government will support this initiative and mobilise our coffee farmers to produce more in preparation for the increased demand. I congratulate them and wish them good luck.

The Hon. Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, today conducted a strategic and technical engagement at Luweero Industries Ltd in Nakasongola District, where he was received by Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeyi, the General Manager of Luweero Industries Ltd, alongside the company's leadership and technical teams, the STI Mobility Bureau, Infrastructure Bureau, and Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC), to explore how Uganda's industrial capabilities can drive national transformation.

The engagement examined the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) ecosystem and its contribution to engineering, advanced manufacturing, research, innovation, and industrial development. The Minister commended the defence establishment for recognising that technological sovereignty and industrial self-reliance are fundamental pillars of modern national security. He further noted that the partnership between Luweero Industries and Kiira Motors Corporation demonstrates the value of shared infrastructure, local supply chains, and technical expertise in advancing the localisation of electric mobility technologies, particularly lithium battery systems.
