NEW: The Welsh Government has admitted that it needs to clarify its guidance for schools on how to teach reading.
This is in response to an ITV News investigation which revealed that methods of teaching reading which have been discredited for decades are being used across Wales.
This is now becoming a national news story in Wales. Great to see primary school teachers like @garein and @robrandel being quoted as they have been advocating synthetic phonics for reading for years.

Primary school teacher @robrandel is spot on. Too many children in Wales are functionally illiterate and cannot access the secondary school curriculum because of poor reading skills. In primary, you learn to read. In secondary, you read to learn.

🇳🇿 "From Term 1 next year, ‘all Kiwi students will learn to read using the structured literacy approach’, by which they mean,I think,to implement phonics teaching in every Kiwi classroom"
🏴 Phonics teaching begins "When appropriate for a learner"

In New Zealand: "The Government has announced that children in their first year of school will undergo phonics checks to help teachers understand their reading progress." https://t.co/JwWnIZw2cz
Why not in Wales, @AddysgEducation@WG_Education?

I thought the ref last night made the correct decision to disallow the Dutch goal against France. You can clearly see from this photo that it was the right decision.
Challenging and at times uncomfortable, but this is essential listening for anyone involved in education in Wales.
At what point do we have to look at a systemic synthetic phonics rollout? Originally a @UKLabour policy widely recognised to have improved reading in England.
Just had our new Lectionaries for school delivered from India. All for £113 with a Book of the Gospels chucked in. Saved hundreds of pounds. Quality top notch. @AndyLewis_RE@michael_merrick@chr1sCarlisle
Fantastic article in DT! 300 years ago, Catholic church on Warwick street was opened to Catholic Londoners by the Portuguese ambassador who were then at the time forbidden to worship on British soil. @BeardyHowse

Schools need to know that systematic synthetic phonics is used by multiple countries that see better PISA reading results than Wales.
Teachers deserve to know what works.
Every child deserves to read well, early, whether they come from advantage or not.
NEWS - @WG_Education quietly releases detailed National Test data for literacy & numeracy, and the picture for eFSM pupils is shocking. A 🧵
@AddysgEducation must listen to research evidence & provide better guidance for the teaching of reading in Wales.
Trying to explain to my non- Catholic friends my utter excitement about having a letter published in the @The_Tablet about saving hundreds of pounds buying new lectionaries from India that Catholic schools will require from Advent 2024 has been somewhat challenging
