📢'AFRICA IS NOT A COUNTRY' is officially out today.
It has been the most incredible journey and I am so very blessed to have been able to work on this book. My immense gratitude to God; everyone at @HarvillSecker and @Vintagebooks; and to my unbelievable agent @KarolinaSutton
On this day in 1916, Ota Benga, an African native who suffered inhumane treatment by being kept in a zoo, committed suicide.
He had been kidnapped in 1904 from Congo, and taken to America and exhibited at the Bronx Zoo with monkeys.
A THREAD!
This school's complicity in this violence cannot go unrecognised. Learn more about school-based police officers and how you can organise against them here: https://t.co/7ug4QhSWfj
There are 683 police officers deployed in schools across the country—disproportionally in working class areas with Black and brown students. Students face a culture of low expectations, personal targeted intimidation, and as we've seen today, physical and emotional abuse.
What happened to Child Q should never have happened and must never happen again. Shocking and appalling treatment from those who should have been protecting her. Please join us in supporting @hackneysutr to stand up and say #EnoughIsEnough
The indignities that Child Q was subjected to are not an aberration, they're part of a bigger picture of institutional racism and discrimination within policing.
I’m appalled this happened in Hackney and I've written to the Borough Commander demanding an urgent meeting #ChildQ
It's been 6 long years - and I can't believe I can FINALLY share this photo.
Nazanin is now in the air flying away from 6 years of hell in Iran.
My heart goes out to Gabriella and Richard, as her long journey back home to them gets closer by the minute.
