A new paper shows worrying declines in oxygen levels in BCโs Queen Charlotte Sound. Researchers project that its deep waters will be largely hypoxic by 2050, with serious consequences for marine life and fisheries ๐ https://t.co/ISV9IZVdHP
Last fall, @SWSocean and I led students at @scienceworldca in building sub-surface floats. We had fun prototyping and were floored by the amazing discussion ๐ฉโ๐ฌ๐จโ๐ป
Linked is our paper on reproducing this activity in a classroom (and why we think you should)

Our new paper describing TReX Deep, a tracer release experiment in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Here are some behind the scenes photos from a TReX cruise on the R/V Coriolis II a few years ago, taken by Joerg Behnke. Such a cool project to be a part of!
๐The hypoxic deep inflow water in the Gulf of St. Lawrence spreads inland at 0.5 cm s-1 and the bulk of the inflow water will reach the estuary after about 4.5 years.

@tjarnikova@simondonner One release opinion is a galvanic timed release- an inexpensive sacrificial link that corrodes over a fairly reliable period: https://t.co/URQ0rFRpkr
@tjarnikova@simondonner Another is an acoustic release, which is perhaps more expensive than what youโre looking for but allows you to be on site when the mooring/float pops up: https://t.co/j1llrkQTGo
New paper on the variability of dissolved cadmium in BC waters, which can reach unhealthy concentrations in Pacific oyster and zooplankton populations. My first co-authorshipโ interesting to link the local circulation to our biogeochemical measurements!

Our next goal is to link this new picture of the intermediate circulation with measurements of contaminants from around the SoGโฆ watch this space. 7/7
Our recent study, just published open access in JPO, looks closely at the intermediate circulation of the Strait of Georgia. In this thread Iโll explain why we care and some of the cool parts of the paper: 1/7
@JanDZika A similar thing is happening to us currently for JPO- the early online release has been available behind a paywall since March but the paper isnโt made open access until the final release when all fees are paid. If anyoneโs paid to access it alreadyโฆ I guess theyโre outta luck?
@ice_rivers_sam @NatureClimate@UBCeoas@ubcnews Congratulations Sam, fantastic news! Such a cool study... my favourite seminar talk (don't tell the oceanographers).
Enjoyed my discussion with @NealPetersenNB and our ocean ambassadors this morning on Ocean Diaries. Watch the replay here (ignore the few minor technical glitches at the beginning๐).
