Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Mogadishu to support the establishment and strengthening of #Somalia’s first independent National Human Rights Institution in line with the Paris Principles.

The partnership will focus on institutional development, governance systems, capacity building, peer learning, human rights promotion and protection, strategic planning, and long-term technical cooperation aimed at building a credible, effective, and independent Commission.

The MoU was signed by @Somalia_NIHRC Chairperson @DrMaryanQasim and @RWallenbergInst Executive Director @Plundber during a high-level meeting attended by senior officials from both sides in the capital, Mogadishu.

The Federal Government of Somalia, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has launched a $12 million climate resilience project to strengthen urban communities across 17 cities between 2026 and 2030.

As a result, women in the targeted camps reported increased awareness of protection risks and available services, improved confidence in seeking support.

Today in Mogadishu, I officially launched the implementation of Somalia’s Law on the Protection and Rights of Persons with Disabilities, marking an important milestone in our efforts to build a more inclusive and equitable society.

In my remarks, I reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and full participation in all aspects of national life. This law strengthens the protection of their rights and dignity while advancing their meaningful inclusion in our country’s development.

I also called on government institutions, civil society, development partners, and the wider community to work together to ensure its effective implementation. In particular, Article 7 affirms the right of persons with disabilities to representation at all levels of decision-making, reflecting our shared responsibility to promote inclusion, participation, and equal opportunity for all citizens.
