Must immigrants erase their culture to join mainstream institutions? Dominant theories assume yes. I find the opposite: deportation protection and work authorization enables institutional participation and cultural maintenance

This suggests immigrants inherently value their culture. Under deportation threat, they conceal ethnic markers. When that threat lifts, their choices reflect authentic preferences, not strategic adaptation
