If you have been to the grocery store recently, this may not come as a surprise: The cost of food is rising.

The price of groceries just saw their highest monthly increase in more than three years, jumping 0.7% from March to April of this year. Over the past year, food prices have risen 2.9%, the highest year-over-year increase since August 2023.

Why the jump? The Iran war and blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has sent diesel prices skyrocketing — the price per gallon for the critical fuel needed to grow and transport food has risen over $2 per gallon since last year.

But even if the Iran war ended tomorrow, experts say global uncertainty is creating inflationary pressures that could continue to push food prices higher for months.

PBS News’ Tim McPhillips spoke with David Ortega, food economist and professor at Michigan State University, to break down why food prices are rising, which staples are seeing the greatest increases and what to expect in the grocery store.
