Berbera Port to Become Major UN Aid Hub for the Horn of Africa
The Berbera International Port in the Republic of Somaliland is set to serve as the United Nations’ primary logistics and aid hub for the Horn of Africa. The port will facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to populations affected by conflict and climate crises across the region, including Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and other landlocked countries.
The move has been welcomed by the UN World Food Programme (WFP). WFP Director for Ethiopia, Zrinka Milisic, described the center as a “major and positive development” that will enable the organization to reach more people in need across the Horn of Africa.
