The situation in Mogadishu appears to be deteriorating rapidly tonight, with reports of government forces attacking the homes of a former president & former PM tonight with heavy weapons:
BREAKING: Intense armed confrontations have been reported in central Mogadishu between federal government forces and militias loyal to opposition politicians.
The fighting comes after an exchange of gunfire earlier on Wednesday near Sayidka Junction, close to the Presidential Palace. Witnesses alleged that the gunfire at Sayidka began after opposition militias fired on a checkpoint manned by government troops.
Residents reported hearing small-arms fire, RPGs, and mortar rounds at Bermuda area, Hawlwadag district, where some opposition figures reside.
Casualties are not yet known.
The latest development comes ahead of a planned rally by opposition supporters on Thursday. The government has insisted that opposition supporters gather at Konis stadium.
Another standoff was reported in Abdulaziz district area, northeast of Mogadishu.
