Having daughters or sons is God-given. Yet, in our society, parents of sons should have a daughter to truly understand what parents of daughters go through. They carry a lifetime of silent worries, from her education and safety to the challenges she may face after marriage. Their concerns rarely end with her marriage; they simply take a different form. Though daughters are now more independent due to the spread of education, we still need a society where raising a daughter is a source of pride, not lifelong anxiety.

The Chinese living in Peshawar, like in other parts of the subcontinent, were a vibrant community till the early 90s, running restaurants & shoe businesses. Their restaurants served the best of Chinese food, maintaining high standards while shoe shops made durable & classy shoes. The entire lot has now left in search of greener pastures and I doubt if anyone is still around.

Hard to describe how broken and devastated I’m feeling today. Maybe it’s because I have a daughter the same age. I cannot stop thinking about that little girl. Maybe she had been asking all day for some money to buy a packet of chips, a juice, or some sweets. The happiness on her face when her parents finally said yes. Maybe she ran out the door with the kind of excitement only children have, already thinking about what she was going to buy. And maybe her mother, overwhelmed with the endless responsibilities that come with running a home, thought exactly what any parent would think, the shop is right there. She’ll be back in a few minutes. What could possibly happen? That question is breaking my heart. Because this wasn’t a child taking a risk. This wasn’t a dangerous situation. This was a little girl going to a local shop. Something children should be able to do without fear. Instead, she never came home.
I keep thinking about her parents waiting for her to walk back through the door. The first few minutes. Then the worry. Then the panic. Then the realization that something was terribly wrong. And I keep thinking about that little girl. How frightened she must have been. How confused she must have been. How desperately she must have wanted her mother.
There is something unbearable about imagining a child spending her final moments scared and alone, when all she wanted was to go buy a few things and come back home. And my heart breaks for her mother, because I know there will be a part of her that replays that moment for the rest of her life. If only I had gone with her. If only I had walked her there. If only I had said no. But that burden should never have been hers to carry.
Every parent wants to believe that the world is safe enough for their child to walk to a nearby shop and come home a few minutes later. That is not negligence. That is trust. And it is a trust that was shattered in the most horrific way imaginable.
A little girl left home expecting to be back in minutes. She never made it home. And I cannot stop thinking about her. May Allah give her family sabar.

In one’s professional life, you encounter many individuals who leave a lasting impression for various reasons. Late Arbab Jehangir Khan, the former Chief Minister of the then NWFP, was someone who was liked and respected by everyone for his gentle demeanour and the respect he showed to everyone. Although we were quite junior in service when he took office as Chief Minister, on the few occasions I met him, I found him to be a true gentleman. I recall an incident during the condolence gathering for a colleague’s mother, where I quietly entered and occupied a corner chair. Arbab Sahib was also present, and to my surprise, I saw him get up from his seat to shake my hand. I felt embarrassed and apologised for not noticing him sooner. He retired from active politics in 2002 but continued to attend functions. In 2007, when I was assigned to a key position in Peshawar, I called to extend my regards and ask if I could visit him. He graciously replied, saying, "You are our 'Illaqa officer', and it's our duty to call on you." Subsequently, Arbab Sahib came to visit me as a warm gesture. As sitting Chief Minister, he would often be online beforehand avoiding the usual protocol, listening to the concerns of the people and contacting the relevant officers. He truly was a people's Chief Minister.

We often think of Chris Gayle for his extraordinary white-ball career, but his Test cricket journey is truly underappreciated. Just look at these stats: 2,000 runs and an average of 50 as an opener in SENA Tests, something most players can only aspire to.

He has got plenty of Test records under his belt, but here are a couple of my favourites.
No other batter in history has scored more than one away Test century in under 80 balls. Chris Gayle has achieved it three times:
A 70-ball century in Australia
A 79-ball century in South Africa
An 80-ball century in England

And my single favourite stat of them all? Him launching the first ball of a Test match for six.

Beyond the stats, here are three feats of Chris Gayle that I people should always hold dear.

1. The first and only player to conquer a 300 plus in Tests, 200 plus in ODIs and 100 plus in T20Is. Wow.

2. The century he scored against Australia when literally all the others were crumbling like flies. He dismantled Doug Bollinger to pieces.

3. The century against South Africa in a Test match when he had a hamstring problem in his back leg. It was like what Maxwell did to Afghanistan, defying every logical expectation.

I remember when he captained the West Indies tour of Australia in 2009. He shouldered them like the colossus he is. An unbeaten 160 odd in a drawn Test at Adelaide and then that 70-ball hundred in Perth that West Indies very nearly seized. Extraordinary.

Do not forget that 333 in Sri Lanka. Not even Lara could replicate that away, and that too in Sri Lanka. Lara had a couple of brilliant series in Sri Lanka but this 333 was in a class apart.
